Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored in pre-algebra and algebra 1 for five years. Ask student to provide me with subject matter that s/he is having problems with prior to tutoring session, so that I can prepare activities that will help the student understand how to work the problem.

Elementary (K-6th)

I love to teach and story tell and I have a state license to teach in this area. I have a Master's Degree, a grade 5B Librarian. I also have a Bachelor's Degree, and am a certified T-5 teacher, certified pre-K through 8th. “Focusing” is very important in order to learn and remember. Your focus affects everything you do.

Let me know if you are interested.

Elementary Math

I am a certified teacher, able to teach math for grades pre-K through 10th grade. I have taught and tutored in this field for over 15 years.

Elementary Science

Science is the intrigue of inquiring minds. Throughout my years of teaching, I have encouraged the promotion of the Scientific Method and scientific exploration.

English

English includes grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, reading, language arts, speaking, and writing. As a teacher for over 25 years, I have taught and tutored all areas and have developed specific activities and strategies that will help students to better understand the subject.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken an ESL/ESOL class that provided lessons and activities to teach and tutor students in this area.

GED

Studying for the GED tests requires a lot of preparation and instruction in the five subjects: Social Studies, Science, Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. I have tutored and taught students to prepare by evaluating their strengths and weaknesses of each subject. Lessons and activities would be scheduled according the evaluations.

Grammar

English includes grammar, spelling, reading, language arts, speaking, and writing. Grammar is very specific and requires teaching students to be clear on what the rules are.
My experience in grammar spans over 15 years. I have developed specific activities and strategies that will help students to better understand specific areas of grammar.

ISEE

I have taken a 24-hour course that provided lessons and activities to teach and tutor students in this area. My certifications include one in education as a teacher and the other in information science as a librarian.

Literature

I love reading and analyzing literature. As a certified teacher, I encourage the discussion and critique of themes, characters, settings, and other topics that enrich the students' experience of this material.

Phonics

As a certified teacher with over 20 years of elementary education instruction and tutoring, I have used phonics to assist at-risk and beginning readers. Phonics is very important in learning to read aloud.

Prealgebra

I have tutored in pre-algebra and algebra 1 for five years. Ask student to provide me with subject matter that s/he is having problems with prior to tutoring session, so that I can prepare activities that will help the student understand how to work the problem.

Proofreading

To effectively learn and develop good proofreading habits, students are taught to critique their own writing by separating themselves from their rough drafts. Teaching the student to become a good proofreader requires learning to focus, taking time, and investing in frequent practice.

Public Speaking

My experience as a teacher, librarian, and storyteller, requires me to perform presentations regularly. For over 25 years, I have shared my ability to speak directly to an audience. With these talents and skills, I motivate others to focus, imagine, and believe that what they have to say is important.

Reading

I am a certified teacher and librarian. As part of my role as a Youth Services Librarian, I provided Reading, Homework Helper, Write Right, and the Solve-The-Math sessions. My belief is that students need to learn to focus in order to successfully learn.

Social Studies

I have over 15 years teaching elementary, middle, and high school social studies. I especially love teaching history and geography. Navigating through our past helps us to journey towards the future with more confidence.

Spelling

Like grammar, spelling is very specific and requires building strong memorization skills in order to be successful in this area. Vocabulary development and spelling are combined to give the student a better grasp of the use of words.

Study Skills

I have over 25 years of experience as a teacher, instructor, and tutor. I help students to identify their learning style, then focus develop, and nurture that style through practice, practice, practice. Once the student has a clear understanding of a skill, retention comes with frequent practice.

Vocabulary

English includes grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, reading, language arts, speaking, and writing. Vocabulary development and spelling are combined to give the student a better grasp of the use of words.

I have taught vocabulary development for over 25 years and I have developed activities that help to motivate students to learn more about word usage.

Writing

In over 25 years of experience teaching writing skills, most students have an aversion to it. Promoting focus, time management, storytelling, and patience help to improve the skills in this area.
