Hello my name is Carolyn L. and I have a sincere passion for teaching and learning. Therefore as a teacher I use my energy and love for English and history to inspire my students to enjoy the learning process as much as I do. I have enjoyed success in the area of English Language Arts and use creativity to engage the students I teach. I focus my tutoring to reading, writing, English, and all areas of history and social studies.

I am a certified teacher specializing in English, reading and writing. I also hold a certification in the area of history and can tutor these classes as I hold degrees in both English and history. I have been teaching for more than ten years and have had success with the rigors of standardized testing, which include the Georgia Writing Test as well as End of Course assessments and the CRCT. I have a proven success record with students who received tutoring at least twice a week.

I also have a Masters Degree in Special Education and have provided special education services and teaching to students with disabilities. Currently I am writing my dissertation and tutoring keeps me sharp as I am in the classroom on a part-time basis.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a Georgia certified special education teacher with a Master's degree in Special Education as well as an Educational Specialist degree. As an Interrelated Resource teacher I have ten years of experience with students with ADD/ADHD and I have seen great success. I encourage students with ADD/ADHD with positive focusing exercises as well as study skills techniques.

Aspergers

I have a Georgia Certification in Special Education and have worked with students with Aspergers for more than ten years. I also have a Masters of Arts degree in Special Education. I have successfully tutored students with Aspergers in after school tutoring.

Autism

I am a certified Special Education teacher who has taught students with Autism for ten years. I have taught mild and moderate Autistic students and have seen success. I have also attended Autistic Workshop and seminars, and these workshops give special education teachers strategies and continued education to continue motivating the autistic inclusive student.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am dual certified by the state of Georgia to teach classes K-6 which include Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science, also Special Education K-12. I have taught grades in my teaching experience which includes 4th and 6th grades, I feel very comfortable in these areas of tutoring.

English

I currently have two five star ratings from other students that I have tutored in English Language Arts and I also hold a Bachelor's degree in English.

Hard Of Hearing

I was an interpreter for the deaf before I began teaching. I continue to work with students who are deaf and hearing impaired. I am fluent in ASL as well as SEE.

Public Speaking

I have had five years tutoring public speaking, with students ranging from grades 9-11. Public speaking is a part of the Language Arts curriculum and mastery of the skill is very important.

I began tutoring speaking classes to help my students feel more comfortable as they present their speeches in class. I taught my students how to relax and began with a joke or related story. As well as to remember to be on the same level with the audience and pace the speech so that it doesn't tend to sound rushed.

As a tutor I enjoy motivating students to work hard in maintaining and developing their abilities in verbal communication skills, as this is a vital element in a successful public speaker.

Sign Language

I have been an interpreter for the deaf for more than twenty years. I hold a certification in interpreting, and have worked in the office of student support services in Birmingham AL. I am fluent in ASL and SEE.

Social Studies

I have a Georgia certification in Social Studies and I have taught this subject on the middle and high school level. I hold an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Special Needs

I currently hold a Masters degree in special education and have taught in the area of special education in the inclusion setting for more than ten years. I have a valid Georgia teacher certification in special education as well as extensive course work to support student success in this area of education. I have taught and supported students with special education needs on all levels of the special education spectrum.

Study Skills

As an Interrelated Resource teacher I have had the experience of teaching Study Skills classes to my students with organizational difficulties. With this experience I am qualified to teach students in need of positive study habits and thereby encouraging academic success. It is the opinion of this tutor that Study Skills is the building block for student achievement.

Vocabulary

I use current teaching strategies to build vocabulary skills, these skills will prove quite useful when students grades 9-11 are taking the SAT, ACT and the Georgia Writing Test. During tutoring sessions I use a chunk of time to increase vocabulary and stress its importance.
