Apparently, the 1950's was a time in our culture when the teacher could leave a classroom of students to run an errand and return without concern of incident. Such was the day when Ms. Gagliardi, my teacher, walked out of her kindergarten
class. Being the oldest of three and Mommy's helper, as usual, I assessed the situation, deciding the teacher was gone too long. I recall scanning the classroom of my peers and thinking, "These kids need something to do." So I asked them, "Would you like me to read you a story?" I received collective vocal consent, obtained a book, and went to work. When Ms. Gagliardi returned, she found me, at the age of five, sitting in her chair, captivating my classmates as I "read" them a story.
Fast forward to today. The evolution of education, our culture, and society have changed radically. I daresay, Ms. Gagliardi would seriously double-think the idea of leaving a classroom of five-year-olds unattended in 2012. What hasn't changed however, is my passion for teaching. As a certified teacher of 17 years for the State of Georgia, my focal experience is with 8th grade English/Language
Arts. At this grade level students are expected to pass the 8th grade Writing
Assessment needed to be promoted to high school. I have tutored students from 8th to 12 grades as well as college freshmen in writing and grammar.
