I have experience working with students who struggle with attention. Although often very bright, students with attention problems may have difficulty demonstrating what they know. Difficulty maintaining focus results in them missing important information. It is important to find out where the deficits are and to work on interventions which can help to fill in the missing pieces. Chunking information into smaller pieces and offering students a variety of activities to learn a new concept can have a positive impact. Students with ADD/ADHD often respond very well to charts which break down learning goals into smaller steps. In between activities, they may respond well to opportunities for physical movement. Most of all, educators should continue to have high expectations of behavior and academic achievement for students with attention issues while implementing appropriate strategies. A one-on-one tutoring environment may allow the student an opportunity to practice skills in a setting free of visual and auditory distractions. Having a good rapport with a teacher/tutor is also very important. A one-on-one setting would allow for the timely development of the student/teacher relationship.

I have experience teaching math in the general education and small group special education setting. I am very patient and good at uncovering weaknesses which may be impacting a student's ability to master higher level concepts. I enjoy implementing visual and hands on strategies to help students grasp mathematical concepts. I believe math can be fun if students are given the opportunity to apply concepts to scenarios they find relevant. I am very familiar with the elementary math curriculum. Some students may simply require repeated practice and repetition and others may require more differentiation than is provided in the daily classroom setting.
I am very proficient in all aspects of the English language including grammar, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic skills. I enjoy teaching English to students that are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and can readily apply my expertise to others struggling with the rules of the English language.

I conduct interest inventories with all of my students and have had success in helping even the most reluctant readers find some form of text to read!
I am skilled at analyzing student errors to identify their stage of development in spelling. I am able to use this information to provide instruction focusing on word work to help students uncover the spelling patterns of the written English language.

I am skilled at providing specialized vocabulary instruction using a variety of strategies. I incorporate authentic language experience activities and technology into my vocabulary lessons.
I understand the direct correlation between reading and writing. Students are being challenged to write in the content areas such as Science and Social Studies, which can be difficult for those who are struggling with written expression. I use a variety of interactive graphic organizers and "thinking maps" to help support writing. I am skilled at assessing writing samples to reveal errors in grammar and syntax. I am able to support students in the writing process while I address their grammatical and syntactical errors.
