About Wendy

I am a certified mathematics teacher (6th – 12th) and graduated with honors at Florida State University with a degree in Applied Mathematics. I then completed an additional 2-year mathematics teaching certification program with Western Governors University. I currently have four years of teaching experience and have taught a variety of math courses including Math 6, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Advanced Algebra II, Practical Math, and Geometry, working with a diverse group of students of different ages and abilities. During that time, I also tutored students one on one as needed.

Furthermore, I have taught 2 years as the lead instructor at Mathnasium, a math-only learning center, where students from 2nd – 12th grade who are struggling in math have a program designed to meet their unique needs. At the center, we used a variety of strategies to explain math in a way that made sense to students and focused on increasing number sense through several mental math techniques.

Finally, I have several years teaching homeschoolers and tutoring high school and college students struggling in courses including Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trignonometry, Calculus I and II, and Physics. I have discovered that my passion is helping students who struggle in math. I thrive in encouraging and building their confidence in mathematics and helping them excel in the subject as I try to create successful experiences of learning. I work diligently to meet the students’ needs in mathematics and I look forward to helping you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have experience tutoring the math portion of the ACT. This test is more straight forward than the SAT and requires one to know formulas and the added subject of trigonometry. I use Cracking the ACT: Princeton Review 2013 and The Real ACT 2013. I have several helpful strategies that I overview as we work on the problems.

Algebra 1

Algebra is probably my favorite subject other than Geometry. I taught Algebra I for 6 years and tutored students in it over a period of 11 years. I enjoy describing the math in easy to understand terms and can reword, draw pictures, give real world examples and make games/aids with the material. I thrive in asking guiding questions to evaluate student progress and teach students how to think about setting up word problems.

Algebra 2

Algebra is probably my favorite subject other than Geometry. I taught Algebra II for 1 year and tutored several students in it over the years. I am currently tutoring a homeschool student in Algebra II. It is a little more involved, in that they delve into more concepts with graphing and focus on systems of equations in 2 or 3 variables, matrices, roots, powers, etc. They also introduce a wider variety of functions and applications. I enjoy describing the math in easy to understand terms and can reword, draw pictures, give real world examples and make games/aids with the material. I also thrive in asking guiding questions to evaluate a student's thinking process and teaching students how to approach and think about solving problems. This is also a good subject for making organized and easy-to-understand math study guides.

ASVAB

I recently tutored a student in the 4 main topics that make up the ASVAB score: Math Knowledge, Arithmetic Reasoning, Vocabulary, and Reading Comprehension. Of course, my main focus is math but I have some helpful strategies for the reading. I made a study guide with all of the important formulas and facts for the student to use. I practiced about a dozen math tests, focusing the most on AR.

Calculus

This is my third year working with Calculus I/II students, mostly college level with one AP Calculus high school student. I have a few really good resources for this subject, which has helped tremendously when figuring out some of the more difficult problems. As with other math subjects, I enjoy explaining the problems in terms of what they are finding, e.g., the area under a curve, slope, velocity, acceleration, or volume of a cylindrical shape. One of my favorite topics in Calculus is related rates, because they are usually real-world situations that you can imagine.

Elementary Math

I taught Math 6 for 2 years. I am currently tutoring a few students in grades 3 and 6. In addition to following the teacher methods, I like to teach students different methods to solve problems, including mental math and visual strategies that I learned at the Mathnasium. I have some great resources for teaching students multiplication and division facts and fractions.

Fortran

I took this class in college for my applied math undergraduate degree and loved it. Got an A. It is much easier than C or C++, which I also took. Have great resources and previous programs that I wrote.

GED

I have several good practice tests for the math portion of the GED and have gone through about 10 of them with a student who not only ended up passing the test but increased her score by 50 points.

Geometry

I love Geometry. I taught it for 2 years and tutored several students in it over a period of 11 years. I enjoy describing the math in easy to understand terms and can reword instructions, draw pictures, give real world examples, create hands-on manipulatives and make games/aids with the material. I also enjoy describing how to create proofs to students in a logical and easy way. I ask guiding questions and teach them how to think about setting up the problems. Geometry can really be a fun subject if you have the right person to teach it. I have plenty of good resources for this subject, including Geometry Made Easy and my teacher's text and notes.

GRE

I have had experience taking and studying for this test and have experience tutoring those who are preparing for it. I use the current Kaplan 2013 Premium GRE Booklet with Practice Tests. And even though the test recently changed, I have some older valuable resources, including a 2004 Princeton Review GRE Test Prep Workbook and CD with two practice tests. Normally, I work through the student's Test Prep Workbook on targeted areas and offer valuable tips and important strategies for attacking the sections.

When we need extra examples or additional tips, I use my materials and go online for examples. Math is my strength for this test. I scored a 720/800 or 156/170 for the new test. I try to find easy methods for solving the problems so that a student doesn't have to memorize formulas or follow procedures. In addition to math, I like the reading comprehension section and have little strategies that I used when I took mine.

Physics

I have tutored a few students in high school physics. I have some good resources, including my college physics book with problems worked out to reference. Also I have formula sheet with all of the formulas needed.

Praxis

I took the Praxis Mathematics Content Exam and received a 167/200, which qualified for recognition of excellence. I have some great study guides for it and have additional resources from the IL state math exam, which I received 277/300.

Prealgebra

I really have fun with this subject because it is the basis for what you need in Algebra and you can do a lot of neat things with it. I taught it for 3 years and tutored several students in it over a period of 11 years. I enjoy describing the math in easy to understand terms and can reword instructions, draw pictures, give real world examples, create hands-on manipulatives and make games/aids with the material. I ask guiding questions and teach students how to think about setting up word problems.

Precalculus

I have several students I am currently tutoring in this subject and have tutored this before. It's like an Algebra III. Many of the topics from Algebra are reviewed and used throughout, like graphing, factoring, domain and range. This subject adds a little difficulty to the types of problems you would see in Algebra. I like to make study sheets with this subject and use strategies like summarizing, rewording, and if possible, show pictures. I usually ask in advance for any study guides a student might have so that I can thoroughly prepare.

SAT Math

I have tutored several students in the math portion of the SAT using Cracking the SAT: Princeton Review 2013, Barron's SAT 2013 and College Board's Official Study Guide 2013. One of my students improved her score by 90 points. I have several helpful strategies that I overview as we work on the problems. There are at least 15 practice tests to use between these books, which I have completed. I also tutored a few students in the reading portion and have some helpful strategies for that, but, of course, I prefer the math. I can also help with PSAT.

TEAS

I have an applied math degree and understand that math portion of this test is 38 middle and high school math questions in 51 minutes. I have recent experience tutoring a student for this test. We used one of her books in addition to some practice printouts. The math test requires knowing and writing down simple formulas and solving basic math problems involving decimals and fractions. There are some equations as well to solve. I like to teach multiple methods to find the most comfortable one for the student.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is incorporated in Precalculus and even in Geometry. I have had experience tutoring in this subject and like it because of all of the visual aspects/graphs associated with it.
