Learning and teaching have both been lifelong passions of mine. I specialize in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) preparation, English, English Grammar and writing. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama with a major in Communications and a minor in Japanese. I also attended Cambridge University in England, where I received a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).
I spent my junior year of college at a prestigious university in Osaka, Japan. In addition to attending college, I began teaching English as a Second Language to businessmen and college students. This sparked a desire for further travel and teaching, and upon graduation from the University of Alabama, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand to teach ESL, TOEFL preparation, grammar and writing. I have also taught in London, England and Surabaya, Indonesia.
In teaching English I always strive to bring the written word off the page in order for the student to have a more organic learning experience. I have found that this approach is vital for the success of the student, for language is not simply a list of learned vocabulary words strung together (which is the way most foreign languages, unfortunately, are taught) but rather a dynamic, alive subject. Practicing speaking fluency is a must for the student to succeed in English in all branches, whether it is grammar, writing, or TOEFL preparation.
I am willing to travel and try to be flexible, though I do maintain a 24-hour cancellation policy. I provide instruction to the private individual or group classes. I teach students of all ages and from all backgrounds--grammar school aged children, high school and college students and businessmen and women.
I look forward to bringing the English language alive and helping all students to succeed in every endeavor.
I have taught many children to read--including my own daughter--by using phonics and other methods, such as by developing sight word lists. Currently the teaching of reading to young children does not incorporate the knowledge of phonics, which I believe is the only route that leads to fluent reading. I get tremendous satisfaction from taking a child who can only sound out their words to becoming fluent readers.
