I am a retired chemist with a career in R/D including management. I have a PhD in Polymer Science as an elastomer physical chemist. I am a published chemist and a lecturer at the graduate school level. I am certified to teach science and mathematics in Ohio, was a "preferred substitute teacher" in two school districts in NE Ohio, and have tutored and taught science and mathematics in high school and middle school in Ohio for 9 years and since 2009 in Georgia. In my experience tutoring chemistry and mathematics, a 2-hour lesson is preferred over a 1-hour lesson to better accomplish understanding of the assignment. I also prefer to know ahead of time the assignment topic so I can review my personal textbooks and bring appropriate background material to the lesson.
For mathematics and chemistry, the tutoring normally involves completing problem sets, and the optimum tutoring lesson is a face-to-face meeting where assigned problems are solved, with the objective not only to get the correct answer but to explain the principles employed to enhance understanding of the topic. However, I have found that a telephone or email based lesson can be equally productive. If this is useful, I am willing to conduct lessons this way also.
