I previously lived in China (Beijing and Shanghai) for about 10 years. While there, I completed an undergraduate course in Chinese studies and did graduate coursework in language acquisition and teaching Mandarin as a second language. I also placed second in an internationally televised competition for Mandarin proficiency. During that time I also tutored extensively in TESOL, both experiences which I enjoyed thoroughly and through which I learned as much as I taught. Since acquiring proficiency in Mandarin, I've spent my time doing freelance translation, but also enjoy opportunities to tutor others and help them to discover the language and how interesting and easy it can be.
I believe that fundamental commitment to acquiring the language, along with daily practice and reinforcement is the only path to obtaining any sort of real ability. As someone who was forced to acquire the language in China with no previous experience, I have personal experience with the benefits of employing various study methods and creating personal challenges for oneself.
I'm currently new to the WyzAnt system of tutoring, but think it will be a valuable tool in connecting with people eager to explore Mandarin. I find students with a clear idea of their goals and progression tend to be more successful, and am willing to negotiate rates with students who have a clear idea of their learning goals.
A key element to any successful tutoring is continuity and commitment, I encourage students to participate in a structured plan with set goals and periodic reviews. I encourage adherence to a set schedule and have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but am more than happy to schedule make-up lessons, provided the student doesn't depart from the schedule in such a way that hinders the learning process.
I'm located just outside of Atlanta, and willing to travel within certain distances.
