For as long as I can remember, I have always been passionate about becoming a teacher. Perhaps this is due to coming from a family of which I am among the fourth generation of educators.
I have thirty-five years as a professional educator including serving in the positions of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Language Arts Teacher, Reading Specialist, Literacy Coach for Reading First and Non-Reading First schools, Early Intervention Program Teacher, and Reading Specialist for a school district. I also have worked in a Montessori School and International Baccalaureate Charter School Middle Years Program.
As a Reading Specialist, my duties and responsibilities included providing leadership and support for teachers utilizing scientific based reading research strategies to improve instruction. I also conducted professional development workshops, administered tests to screen, diagnose, and determine outcomes of students in order to drive instruction, scheduled reading blocks for teachers, served on the Leadership Committee, School Improvement Committee, and provided corrective feedback to teachers. I was also in charge of the school district's Response to Intervention program which is an academic intervention used to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning as a means of preventing academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress measurement, and increasingly intensive research-based instructional interventions for children who continue to have difficulty.
I have an Educational Specialist degree in Curriculum Instruction, two Master of Arts in Reading Instruction with State Certification and Reading Instruction, and a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I am currently in the process of completing my Educational Doctoral in Curriculum and Instruction.
I am certified in three states as a Reading Specialist, Early Childhood, Elementary and Middle Grades Teacher.
Most of my experience in the classroom as an educator has been teaching students in grades K - 5 in all disciplines and Middle School Reading and Language Arts.
In order for students to become successful and maximize learning, an assessment is administered so that instruction is tailored and does not cause frustration. This will enable me to differentiate instruction based on the needs of each student and at the same time provide challenging lessons. In addition, homework is assigned as an extension and to provide additional practice on the skills and concepts taught.
I try to be flexible with time. While I have a 24 hours cancellation policy, I offer make-up classes.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to become successful in your educational endeavors.
