I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese, TESOL-certified, and have taught English in China. Having taught in an overcrowded and under-resourced school, I've witnessed firsthand how easily students can fall behind in class. It's difficult for teachers to accommodate students who are on different learning curves in a classroom environment. This is why it's important for students to admit that they're struggling in certain subject areas, and get the help they need.

As a cum laude college graduate, I understand the challenge of cramming for an exam, rather than learning for the sake of learning. We've all wondered as students why we have to take certain classes. My job as a tutor is to not only simplify the material for my students, but to also help them find the relevance of the material and appreciate the learning process. Through 1:1 tutoring sessions, I also help my students identify study methods that are helpful and effective to them personally. By adapting these study skills when approaching subjects students need more help in, they will be better prepared to tackle future challenges they encounter.

I possess 6 years of experience in providing career development services, including: editing resumes, college admissions essays, and graduate personal statements, as well as preparing individuals to showcase their skills and experiences for job interviews. I also specialize in teaching ESL and Chinese.

I can be flexible with time and the location, but please respect my 5-hour cancellation policy. I look forward to hearing how I can help you succeed in your studies or career development!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have six years of experience in bolstering resumes, conducting mock interviews, and proofreading personal statements in a variety of professions. From being a college recruiter for a Fortune 20 company, my advice to students is to always take the time to define and develop their interests before trying to convince others that they are a good fit. Through one-on-one meetings, I help students find fulfilling careers that are align with their interests and skill sets, hash out their elevator speeches, and prepare thoughtful and focused interview answers to land the jobs they want.

Chinese

I am a native speaker and grew up bilingual, speaking English and Mandarin Chinese at home. I have also studied Mandarin Chinese in the States as well as overseas, adding to my fluency. I obtained a certificate in Mandarin Studies from the National Taiwan Normal University and a minor in Chinese from The Ohio State University from my undergraduate studies. I have also worked a combined 1.5 years in China and Taiwan, including teaching English in Chinese.

College Counseling

I have over six years of experience in helping individuals write college essays and personal statements for a variety of graduate programs. Writing is a skill that is to be refined through a process, and this seems like a daunting task when eloquent and focused thoughts don't naturally flow from our finger tips. I support my students from start to finish by helping them generate thoughts and ideas, filtering/focusing, outlining, writing, and revising. I don't have a universal secret formula, but I listen to the things my students tell me about themselves and I advise them on what to focus on or stay away from to best sell themselves on their qualifications. This involves their voice and the expression of their interests and passions. With my help, my students are able to present who they are in an impressive, genuine, and humble manner.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker, TESOL-certified, and have taught English in China to children in a classroom and adults in the workplace. Learning a foreign language is difficult, and is most effectively done through immersion. However, it can also be intimidating to some, so my aim is to challenge my students and ultimately build their confidence in the learning process.

In order for my students to get the most out of my teaching, I try to first understand their needs and goals. After understanding a student's goals (prepare for a test, apply for graduate school, find a job, etc.) and oral/written English levels, I can adapt lessons to the appropriate context to make the content more relatable. To ensure my teaching methods are conducive to a particular student's learning, I effectively set objectives, plan lessons, check for understanding before proceeding to other subjects, and constantly review.

Public Speaking

As a former teacher and recruiter, I know what captivates audiences. Both jobs involved presenting information in a concise manner and evaluating knowledge/performance. Whether you're speaking to a child or persuading someone to hire you in a job interview, your message must be tailored to your audience so they are compelled to listen to what you have to say. Public Speaking is a skill that can't be obtained from simply reading about it, it must be developed through practice and it begins with the ability to handle everyday conversations in a confident manner. It excites me to see the transformation of individuals who once lacked confidence speaking about subjects they're familiar with to having conversations about topics they're less familiar with while still exuding confidence.

Study Skills

Good study habits must be learned and developed, but everyone has their own preferences for what best helps them learn material. Having taught English in China to students that came from different schools and were at different levels, I equipped each of my students with a variety of tools to help them identify what was most effective for them. Through classroom instruction and individualized tutoring, I helped students practice and apply what they were learning using a variety of tools, including notecards, white boards, worksheets, dialogue, dictation, etc.

Very patient with attention to detail and accuracy — Judy was always positive, reassuring, and patient. Her attention to detail is fundamental and she was very persistent about correct tones and the accuracy of written characters. And most of all, she keeps it fun. I learned a lot and speak a certain level of Mandarin with confidence thanks to her way of teaching. I would definitely recommend Judy as a tutor. ...
