In order to lead, you must follow! Though I am not quite sure who made this statement first, I have definitely taken this phrase to heart and I feel that it exemplifies my experience and my desire to take my dreams to the next level. For many years, I have tutored students ranging from Pre-K to graduate level in various subjects. I feel that my experience has made me a well-rounded individual. I have tutored students from many different backgrounds and some I have had the opportunity to tutor them from junior high to college. I have indeed followed as an employee under different supervisors at different companies and I have tutored independently. I know the value of a good tutor and the relationships that can be built that reach beyond the classroom. A tutor can be a mentor, a friend, a role model, a brother/sister, and in some cases a father/mother to those that need that guidance. It is amazing the bond that can be formed when the right tutor enters a student’s life.
Over the course of my tenure in Atlanta, I have tutored hundreds of students through StudyPoint, Club Z! Tutoring, Zoom Tutoring, and Georgia Gwinnett College. I have taught them how to become more efficient in their studies. I have warned them of the pitfalls that may lay ahead in an effort to prevent them from making the same mistakes that I have made. My belief is that a good tutor wants what is best for the student and goes the extra mile to encourage and support the student irrespective of their background, race, color, or creed.
Not only have I followed, but also I feel that I have led my students toward success. Knowledge is a powerful tool and by equipping students with knowledge, tutors are able to shape their future. I try to set a good example by being a role model for my students. I have experienced various aspects of learning in different environments. I have had the opportunity to travel abroad several times and have lived with host families in both Mexico and Spain. I have also traveled and lived in the Caribbean. My experiences have taught me to value the knowledge that I have gained. I bring these experiences into the tutoring environment. I have also had the opportunity to co-author material for SAT, PSAT, and ACT preparatory manuals in which I wrote questions and edited material for the tutor and student manuals.
I feel that since I have experience as a tutor I will be better able to understand the needs of the students I tutor. In college, I was member of the Leadership Institute at my school and I served in several leadership roles both in college, graduate and medical school. I am currently a fourth year medical student. I have learned to balance my time and I teach my students likewise.
Falafel! I know that somehow does not fit. However, it leads into my next point. I think a sense of humor is important. While that may seem like a random place to write that name of a popular meat substitute, I believe that it got your attention and perhaps made you smile. Learning does not have to be boring. I try to make my sessions interesting. This will ensure that students who are tutored will be constantly engaged.
What makes me the right candidate for the job? Well, I think my experience, my personality, tenacity to get the job, sense of humor, vast knowledge, awareness of my surroundings, ability to lead, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence all speak for themselves, oh and my humility. I look forward to helping your student become better equipped to become one of tomorrow's leaders!
