I first became interested in languages when I was a child growing up in the Philippines. My parents, although European Americans, became fluent in Tagalog and Cebuano, two of the most prominent languages on the islands. Being immersed in those languages and that culture helped them understand immediately the areas of the language that they needed most.
This concept stuck with me as I studied linguistic theory and ESL teaching in college. What I learned through my research, personal experience, and the memories of my parents learning languages during my childhood boiled down to one big idea: personal holistic motivation.
But having a clear goal and a strong motivation are not quite enough for effective language acquisition--One needs a series of small goals that follow the human mind's basic steps in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). A structure, with clear goals but room for individually-tailored creativity is necessary. Thus, in my teaching I follow the ACTFL scale of language acquisition.
For the last year I have been teaching with Conexion 10/40, an English Language Immersion program in Duluth, GA. I have classroom experience, one-on-one experience, and absolutely love talking with and relating to students. Many times, I feel privileged as I learn much from the determination and tenacity of learners themselves.
In my class or tutoring sessions, students laugh (a lot), learn to be self-motivated language learners, and find in our class time a comfortable place to study, listen, and practice.
Proofreading experience: as a tutor and English-language teacher, I have helped and coached countless students through various projects and creative pieces, helping them spot errors that can be corrected simply and concisely. In addition, I worked at the writing center during my undergraduate studies at cornerstone University in Michigan and proofread four hours at a time, learning to spot obscure mistakes and generally enrich the writing in whatever way I was able.
