ADD/ADHD

I have my Masters degree in Special Education. I have been a certified teacher since 2000. I am certified Interrelated, which covers many areas. Under the interrelated umbrella are ADHD, Autism, LD, EBD, and Conduct Disorder. My specialty area is Emotional/ Behavioral Disorders (EBD). I have experience with all grade levels from Pre K through 12th grade. All of my evaluations have always been excellent. My son is ADHD as well. I understand through work and home how to work with these students in a way that is helpful and productive.

Autism

I have experience working with students with autism from pre-k through 12th grade. One of my favorite experiences was with a second grade student. He was very fascinated with SpongeBob, and an exercise ball. He focused on it to the point of not being able to complete his work. I got creative and made an arrangement with him that after 15 minutes of work he could bounce on the exercise ball for five minutes. It worked very well, and he began to get a lot accomplished.

Elementary (K-6th)

*In 2004 I added Elementary Education to my certification in Special Education.

Special Needs

I have experience working with many different age students with many different disabilities. My first teaching job was in the self contained setting working with students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders and Autism. After this I began teaching in an interrelated setting. In this setting I travel from class to class coteaching with another teacher. In this setting the students are in the general education classroom. I have the opportunity to work with students with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, traumatic brain injury, emotional behavioral disorders, and mildly intellectually delayed.

Study Skills

I taught Study Skills on the middle school level grades 6-8 for 2 years. During this time I taught the students actual Study Skills curriculum. It was research based, and there was an actual curriculum for it. The program was called Kansas Strategies. I did not use the class for "homework help" as many teachers do. I have done the same thing working with high school students (grades 9-12). I have seen the students show great improvement in not only classwork grades, but test grades as well.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
