I love to teach music and language to students of all ages and abilities, taking you from point A to point B,
step by step, with a focus on your particular interests and talents.

My adult life has been devoted to jazz, to the piano, to composing music, and to Arabic language and literature. (I even had the opportunity to teach jazz and blues in Cairo, Egypt, to Egyptian musicians!)

I have taught in many schools and colleges, as well as at a home studio in Decatur GA. I am also a free-lance arranger and conductor,
and teach Arabic singing at Atlanta's Alif Institute. I am open to Skyping to folks that are further away, as well.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I have native-like fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian colloquial. I have a MA in Arabic Lecture (Georgetown University) and taught Arabic for 6 years at the college level (Middlebury College, Emory University). I also taught high school students intensive Arabic at Federal Summer Language Academy, 2013, at UNG.

Composition (Music)

I have taught composition, theory, and musical analysis at Atlanta colleges, including Georgia State and Clark Atlanta, and many private students at my home studio in Decatur. Most of them are singer songwriters, but some are headed more towards jazz or classical chamber music. I teach arranging, sequencing, orchestration, and how to flesh out the germ of a good idea. I also have two graduate degrees in music theory.

Ear Training

For over 15 years, I have taught all music theory subjects: ear-training, keyboard harmony, voice-leading, harmonic analysis. I am also a composer, arranger, pianist, and singer. While most of my teaching has been at Georgia State University and Clark Atlanta University, I also
maintain a home studio.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently teach in the after-school program at Indian Creek Elementary school in Clarkston. I also taught for one year at St. Jude the Apostle School (K-8) in Sandy Springs, GA. I also am the father of a learning-disabled child, whom I have tutored through Elementary School.

ESL/ESOL

Directed ESL program for Methodist church in Washington DC
Taught ESL at Georgia State and Georgia Perimeter College.
Taught ESL privately for several Atlanta corporate clients.
Enjoy helping students improve their accent, their comprehension, their vocabulary,
and their fluency.

Guitar

I have performed as a guitarist and singer for 30 years, solo and with many groups, including pop music, rootsy folk music, and music of South America (on nylon-string or classical guitar). I have recorded with several singer-songwriters in DC and in Atlanta. I also play jazz voicings and know a lot of jazz standards. I can teach finger-picking style, strumming types, alternate chord voicings.
I have taught both adults and children.
I prefer to teach at my Decatur home studio.

Music Production

I am an active songwriter, arranger, and producer, especially of live "ethnic" events, but also of all types of Americana. I play guitar, piano, keyboard, and sequence in Logic Pro 9,
with large virtual libraries.

I can teach "groove," form, arranging, music technology, notation, and how to take the germ of a song and make it whole.

Music Theory

Taught music theory, composition, piano, aural skills, and music analysis fulltime at Georgia State University and Clark Atlanta University for 14 years.
MM (1998) and PhD (2009), Music Theory.

Piano

I've taught piano to children and adults for 20 years, all levels, and styles. I am a working jazz pianist, classical accompanist, and arranger. I am also a guitarist and oud player. And with a PhD in Music Theory, I have taught at Emory. Georgia State, and Clark Atlanta.

Sight Singing

I have taught Sight Singing at Clark Atlanta University and Georgia State University and privately to my jazz and classical piano students. My PhD is in Music Theory and I am a composer and arranger.

Spanish

I taught Spanish at Emory University, as well as Arabic.
I'm American but raised in Mexico, a near native speaker, who has also traveled in Spain, Peru, Bolivia, and Costa Rica, and performed with many Latin-American music groups.
