I love to learn, and I love to teach. This passion combined with my experience make me a great tutor. I love to help people achieve their goals. Whether it is teaching someone to read, or helping a college student understand how to write a paper, I have that experience.
I have tutored students with special needs grades K-8, within this group I have taught all subjects. Then in respect to grades 5-8, high school and college I have only tutored English. I have had a special emphasis in my training in the area of phonics instruction. This training is a combination of training in The Wilson Reading System, my studies at Georgia State University, which included Linguistics, and my volunteer training and work with Literacy Volunteers of America.
My tutoring philosophy: I have found that every student is different, I need to address their needs in a highly individualized manner. For some individualized study at class level is sufficient to provide the extra support that is needed. However, I have found that sometimes what is called for is to access the student's understanding, and find exactly where the lack of understanding began. Once that is accomplished, we "mend that bridge", then the distance back to class level is achieved quickly and easily.
I've worked with children who were not able to work at class level. I've seen how destructive this is to their self-esteem. Fortunately, I've also had the pleasure of helping students mend the gaps of understanding needed, so that they could excel.
Thus, it is my mission to help people who are struggling or blocked, to become freed and confident in their studies.
