I am a teacher looking to have a flexible schedule.
I would like to be considered as a candidate for a position as a tutor. I have a BS in Elementary Education and an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of MN. During the 2001/12 school year I taught Kindergarten at Amana Academy. Previously, during the 2010 through 2012 school years I substitute taught in the Forsyth County Schools and also in Minneapolis, MN as well. During 20010/11 I was a preK teacher at Mayflower Preschool. Prior to that I taught 3rd grade in Minneapolis for the 2001-2002 school year at Four Winds Elementary and taught there 8 years previously as well. For the past several years I have also home-schooled my children, taken college classes to keep up with current trends in education as well as keep my teaching license. I have been involved at my children’s schools through volunteering, running reading groups and tutoring, as well as co-chairing the Scholastic Book Fair for the past 3 years. At this time I am looking for more flexibility than a traditional classroom offers and being involved in a tutoring environment would provide me excellent opportunity to stay involved in teaching, which is my passion, yet have the flexibility I desire.
Since I began teaching I have taken advantage of every opportunity to grow as an educator and am committed to my own professional growth and development. I have always been ready to learn new ways to teach and implement innovative strategies in my classroom as well as in my home while homeschooling. Having been in the classroom for 8 years in a variety of schools, from charter to private to public, I believe teachers need to have high expectations for all students and use a variety of instructional strategies to promote success. While teaching I assessed children on a learning continuum in a variety of ways: portfolio assessment, literature circles, centers, cooperative groups and criterion-referenced tests. I believe assessment is a vital component of the learning environment and helps identify individual student’s strengths and areas of growth. One-on-one tutoring provides a unique environment to help students grow academically
While teaching in the classroom I had 4 student teachers. I was responsible for helping the students slowly take over my classroom through hands-on instruction and one-on-one conferencing. I evaluated their performance both in their classroom teaching and written lesson plans. I kept a time sheet of time spent in teaching as well as planning, and finally I was responsible to write a final evaluation and letter of reference based on their performance in my classroom and student growth.
I am very creative and love to talk and share ideas with others through calling, emailing and social media. When I am involved in a project or job I enjoy telling others about it and getting feedback from them on their thoughts and ideas to better the project. I like to meet new people. As a parent I have hired many people, from nanny’s for my children to people and companies to work on my home or car. I have learned many good questions to ask to ensure I get the best possible result or person for the job.
As an educator I also believe I have a responsibility to have high professional standards including being committed to students and their learning, creating a supportive learning environment for children, knowing the materials, managing student learning, collaborating with colleagues and the community, and being committed to developing my own professional growth.
As an educator and a parent myself, I understand the needs and concerns of parents and the value of one on one tutoring for both a struggling student as well as one who is academically gifted. I believe my life experience, teaching background and academic preparation would allow me to be a benefit to your tutoring company. I have included my resume as well and I would love to be considered as a candidate as a tutor. I assure you that, if given the opportunity I would be an enthusiastic, committed and creative educator.
Sincerely,
Melynda G.
