ADD/ADHD
I have had the pleasure to work with many children whom have ADD and ADHD. Right now I am working in the process of getting certified through special education as well.
When I work with children whom have ADD/ADHD I use a variety of techniques.
1. Make directions clear and short. Repeat if necessary.
2. Make each task specific…in other words; instead of giving several directions at once, split the directions into smaller steps.
3. Give reminders often, coaxing the child to finish. It is important to complete projects once started to help the child learn to sequence beginning to end.
4. Use interesting materials; hands-on activities, visual and auditory aids.
5. Most of all I am patient, as this is the best strategy for helping a student.
Elementary (K-6th)
I am certified in elementary education with the state of Georgia T-4 ECE P-5. I also have a BS degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I have a strong desire to educating young minds and help them blossom into, well-rounded, responsible, and successful individuals. From my experience thus far, I have had wonderful opportunities to teach a diverse group of students, including those with learning disabilities, those who perform at grade level and below and those who are gifted/exceptional.
Elementary Math
I have had wonderful opportunities to teach a diverse group of students in math, including those with learning disabilities, those who perform at grade level and below, and those who are gifted/exceptional.
As a tutor I help guide students through the solution process. I ask the student leading questions that will direct the student towards the correct steps. I also help by teaching concepts. This helps my students become independent learners. In mathematics, it is important to teach concepts rather than just processes or procedures. Understanding the concepts makes remembering the procedures easier.
ESL/ESOL
I was able to teach ESL in Costa Rica. I have excellent communication skills, patience, and ability to relate to students of diverse backgrounds. I help students with basic theory, teaching speaking, grammar, listening, reading and writing skills.
Phonics
As a teacher, I am certified in reading and language development. I have had the opportunity to help students in preschool and kindergarten learn phonics in order to help them learn to read. Phonics, the connection between individual letters and its sound, are the building blocks to reading. Early readers sound out and decode words to make meaning. This is done by helping the student develop pre-reading skills and encourage emergent literacy through spoken language, phonological awareness, print awareness, and more.
Reading
I am certified in Elementary education which also includes reading p-5. I am able to teach students how to read by breaking down concepts that start from learning phonics, guided reading and comprehension strategies. I also love to help children acquire a love for reading.
Study Skills
As a certified teacher in Elementary education (p-5) and tutor I have worked with students in elementary and middle school to help them acquire study skills. I have helped my students with study skills by showing them to apply certain strategies and tips. The most important part of study sills is to help a students with organization skills as well.
During a study skills sessions, I cover note taking, time management, organization, binder skills, learning styles, concentration and memory, test preparation, and test taking tips. A regular routine and assigned time for homework is also essential.
One of the first things that I generally do in the first two sessions is to help the student develop a working notebook.
The working notebook is the daily notebook your child takes to class.
I have found that this strategy helps students get organized and with help with general study skill habits.
