Teaching is a calling. I firmly believe in this principle. The student, the parents, and the teacher form the core group of making education important and valuable. Education has been important to me, and I want it to be for my students.

I have been teaching literature and history full-time for the last sixteen years at The Heiskell School in Atlanta. My students consist of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. It is a joy and a blessing to be a teacher.

My undergraduate degree in religious education came from Wayland University in Plainview, Texas. I then earned a master's degree in religious education from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Later, I attended Georgia State University in Atlanta for the classes necessary for certification in Georgia. My certification consists of Middle Grades (grades 4-8) and Social Studies (grades 7-12).

My goal in working with students involves consistent, steady development of the student. This goal is achieved by teaching content, by involvement in learning activities, and by demonstrations of competency. It is a tremendous joy to work with students and parents. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I appreciate parents who help their children to build their skills in these foundational areas. I am a certified teacher in the state of Georgia; I hold a T-5 certification (Master's Degree). I have taught at the Heiskell School in Atlanta for the past 16 years. As a part of my duties, I have worked with students in regards to reading, writing, and math skills through a program called Discovery. In this program I worked with students in grades 1-8. The program was designed to work with students to increase their word attack skills, their fluency in reading, their writing skills, their auditory and visual memory skills, and their basic math skills. I also have taught literature, grammar, and history to students in grades 6-8.

Social Studies

Social Studies is my first love among subjects at school. I am a certified teacher in the state of Georgia; I hold a T-5 certification (Master's Degree). I am certified in Social Studies for Middle Grades (grades 4-8). I am also certified for history (grades 7-12). I have taught history for the past 16 years at The Heiskell School in Atlanta for grades 6-8. The history topics I have taught include the history of Rome, the history of the Middle Ages, the history of the Age of Exploration and Discovery, and the history of the United States (Colonial times through World War II).

Study Skills

I have worked in education both on the individual level and on the classroom level for sixteen years. First, I have a Bachelor's and Master's level degrees in Religious Education. I also completed classroom work in order to be certified in the state of Georgia. I have a T-5 certification in Middle Grades and in Social Studies. I have taught for sixteen years in the classroom; I have taught junior high literature, grammar, and history during those years. I have helped students with organization of their materials and strategies for approaching subjects of study. I have also worked with elementary and junior high students in a program called Discovery. In this one-on-one program the students work on reading, writing, and math skills. Within this program, skills related to memory and mental organization are also strengthened. I now tutor through Wyzant with elementary and junior high students to grow in their mental approach to subjects such as reading and writing.

Perfect for us! — Dusty is prompt, extremely polite, attentive, creative and a perfect fit for us. Our child needed a little extra coaching in reading and comprehension. We can already tell a big difference after just a few lessons. We really appreciate WyzAnt helping us find Dusty. ...
