I started tutoring when I was still in high school, and I have a total of over six years of experience tutoring. I have tutored mostly in math and literature and have given piano lessons off and on for five years, but I can also tutor chemistry and Spanish. I am fluent in Spanish, in fact, and lived in Mexico for a year and a half. I have worked professionally as a translator and interpreter for almost three years and also have extensive experience in editing and proofreading.

I believe that any student is capable of learning material if they can learn to find the material interesting. I strive to show practical application of whatever material I am teaching and make learning fun. I also firmly believe that laughing increases learning and that students learn more effectively when they see how the material relates to something they enjoy.

Aside from teaching and translating, I enjoy writing and have had both poems and a short story published. I spend a lot of time at my piano and also play violin, French horn, trumpet, and guitar. Other interests of mine include hiking and dancing.

Chemistry

Chemistry can be complex, but it is always logical. It's like trying to solve a puzzle, and the key to chemistry is often in repetition. I have found numerous ways to use my knowledge of chemistry in every-day life and try to help my students see those practical applications.

Grammar

When I was living in Mexico I found myself teaching English, and one of the most complex aspects of the English language is its grammar. I tutored and taught English grammar for a year and a half to foreign language speakers, so I definitely have the experience to teach English speakers. I can teach grammar using a variety of methods, though I have special experience with diagramming. I took an entire semester of grammar in college where I passed with one of the highest grades in the class.

Geometry

Geometry can be especially fun to tutor, and I have about two years of experience specifically tutoring geometry. It is like trying to solve a logic puzzle. Some information is given, and some information is left for the student to figure out, so I try to teach it as a game. Geometry is also a skill that can be used throughout life in any field or circumstance, so I try to encourage students to find and experiment with practical application.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is an essential tool in education and business. Students, teachers, and anyone interested in the business world must have a grasp of how to use this program efficiently. It can be the difference between passing and failing, getting a job and unemployment, achieving a promotion or award and being overlooked.

Spanish

I have been speaking Spanish for almost ten years. I am completely fluent and have been working for three years as a freelance translator and interpreter. I am taking the GACE tests to teach Spanish in March. I have also tutored in Spanish and pride myself on finding simple ways to explain grammar concepts and vocabulary and to help students remember them.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is another "puzzle." It's all about figuring out what you need based off what you have. Still, there is a simple, standard process of elimination, as it were, to solving most any trig problem and once learned it can be the key to passing the class. The practical applications in almost any field are endless. While it can seem boring, with enough practice anyone can master trigonometry.

English

While I was a Spanish major in college, I extensively pursued English as an alternative interest. I enjoy all aspects of English, including literary analysis and grammar. I especially enjoy tutoring writing-both short, five-paragraph essays and extensive, analytical research papers.

Literature

One of my favorite subjects, literature is a means of travel to any place at any time, a window into the human identity, and an elegant stepping stone into expression of opinions and arguments. Reading literature can be exciting, and discussing it teaches us as much about ourselves as it does the subject of the piece.

Proofreading

While in college and since then I have often proofread papers for students. If the students follow my suggestions, I can usually guarantee that the paper will be scored one or two letter grades higher. I both edit (GUM - Grammar, Usage, Mechanics) and proofread (revision and organization of ideas). Additionally, I help students to learn from their mistakes and to become better writers in the future.
