It is not enough to show someone how to solve a problem. It is more valuable to teach someone to think of a problem as arising from knowable causes. In chemistry, it is not just about memorizing formulas for solving calculations. Atoms and molecules behave the way they do for specific reasons, many of which can be quantified: pH, basicity/acidity, electronegativity, hydrophobicity, polarity, and electron delocalization, to name a few. Simply knowing that plus(+) like minus (-) will take you a long way in chemistry.
Biology's overarching theme is evolution through differential survival of the most fit. This struggle for existence is played out in all living systems from single cells to populations of organisms. Understanding how certain living systems work always and inevitably returns to themes of evolution, form fits function, and most importantly, that living systems are not exempt from the laws of physics and chemistry.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in biopsychology with a minor in chemistry. My main interests are in molecular and systemic neurobiology, and I am seeking an opportunity as a tutor so that I can share my love of science while helping others to also appreciate science and its way of thinking. Science sees the world as a mix of chaos and order, each guiding the other under fundamental and knowable rules. I emphasize fundamentals and how they apply to the specifics, and it is often the case that the student does not have a firm grasp on the fundamentals, thereby hindering that student's ability to grasp more complicated material. Learning and progress requires that one adds pieces of increasing complexity to the simple models developed by experimentation, observation, and study, in order to obtain a clearer and truer picture of reality.
Therefore, I encourage others, and myself, to understand that something like the complex biochemical steps involved in something so quotidian as contracting a muscle are not a result of some unknowable, mysterious force, but are rather due to determinable causes that can be understood by simply knowing that plus likes minus.
