Greetings Parents and Potential Study Buddies!
My name is AJ. I am a 27-year-old Howard University grad and Atlanta native who loves learning and loves teaching. In my ten years of tutoring experience, I've grown to understand that the best part about learning is having fun while doing so, and I bring a fun yet practical approach to the lessons I teach. By day I am a curriculum development specialist at a science-based education company for kids, and spend my time creating engaging and exciting science workshops for kids around the metro Atlanta area. I believe the best way to learn is with excitement and laughter, and I bring that energy to all of the students I have the privilege to teach.
As a former magnet student of the DeKalb County School System (Kittredge Magnet through Chamblee Charter High, whoop whoop!), I understand the challenges students today face with education. Learning is moving at a much faster rate than ever before, and the expectation for students to reach educational milestones grows higher each year. I make it my personal mission to discover each of my students’ learning styles, and I use the information I gather to develop learning and study plans that are custom to my individual students. I center my tutoring style on inquiry based learning; that is, I work to make each subject I tutor applicable to my students’ everyday lives. I believe by eliminating the question “Why do I need to know this?”, I can assist students in achieving both short term and long term study goals. My tutoring capabilities range from primary phonics to high school standardized testing preparation, and I specialize in reading disabilities, science and mathematics.

Chemistry

Chemistry is awesome! With what other subject can you blow things up and freeze them until they explode? Keeping the excitement of chemistry in mind, I help my students de-boggle the theories and formulas that make up the coolest subject known to man!

Vocabulary

In my experience, I have found that many of the vocabulary words assigned to students are directly linked to reading passages from the subjects they are studying. I help my students to identify context clues and writing styles to create a firmer grasp on vocabulary words. We expand these areas with games and hands on activities to lessen the challenges vocabulary can present.

Reading

Many students who have trouble with reading often have trouble with vocabulary and grammar rules. By bolstering these areas, I challenge my students to push themselves to "Read Well, Read Often!"

Trigonometry

With sine, cosine, tangents and inverses, trigonometry can become a blur of words to many students. When tutoring this area, I've found it best to find mnemonic devices and songs to help them remember the rules of trigonometry, as well as the direct logic to the rules and principles.

Writing

Often, writing is a challenge for students because they get hung up on the topic on which they are required to write. My tutoring style for writing explores the students innate ability to tell a story and translates that into a writing style that is unique to them. Once we have established the student's writing style, we go back to focus on writing fortification through grammar and vocabulary enhancement.

Physical Science

I like to think of physical science as the "sampler plate" introduction to other science fields, i.e. biology, chemistry, and physics. In my tutoring sessions, I've found that pushing students to question often helps them to discover the answers to much of what they encounter in physical science. I also use these sessions as a way to fortify universal science principles that are applicable in advanced studies.

Spelling

Spelling can be a challenge when it comes to the English language. Instead of focusing on specific words, in our sessions my students focus on the rules that control spelling and pronunciation so that they will have the ability to eventually spell almost any word they hear.

ACT English

I believe standardized test preparation tutoring should not focus on teaching the student content information. It should instead focus on teaching the student the fundamentals of the particular test, i.e. how questions are presented and evaluated. I help the student to focus on the structure they should expect rather than the content; my experience has shown me that when a student understands how the exam is laid out, the student will perform at a much higher level.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an extensive background in elementary education, and am currently working on a degree in education at Western Governors University. I can provide my degree mentor's contact information to verify my progress.

Phonics

I believe using multiple learning methods to approach phonics is the best way to help a student master the sounds necessary to formulate words and sentences. By using visual clues, auditory lessons, and tactile games, a student can develop his or her phonic skills at a more accelerated rate than using one method alone. I believe that in order for a student to work to his or her full potential, they must first know the best way in which they learn. I take a stylistic approach to discovering this; that is, I help students to figure out which combination of seven different learning styles (visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social, solitary) works for them. We then capitalize on this style to create approaches for each of the subjects they are learning.
