I have taught a variety of grade levels for the last ten years. I have worked for the Boston Public School System and the Cobb County School District as a classroom teacher. I have extensive experience with English as a Second Language and working with students with disabilities.
While at my time with the Boston Public Schools, I received intense training with a mathematics program called Investigations. The program focuses on allowing students to use what they know to reason about mathematical situations. This approach to teaching math creates a solid mathematical foundation on which to build knew knowledge. Students use math in everyday situations and are encouraged to produce their own strategies in order become strong problem solvers.
When teaching reading, it is my priority to assess students using specific leveled texts and detailed notes. This method allows me to determine their reading level, identify their reading strengths, analyze their very specific weaknesses, and set specific goals to get them to the next level. I use this continued assessment to guide my lessons. All students are different, and it is imperative that an educator knows what very specific next steps need to be taken in order to master the very complex task of being a strong reader.
I love education, and after making many mistakes, I feel confident about my ability to help a student feel academically successful. Although I love running a classroom, my new family requires me to spend more time at home. It is my goal that I can continue doing what I love and have sufficient time to raise my kids. I would love to help you or your child be successful in school. Contact me if you feel I can be of any help.
During my ten years in teaching I have worked with several children who were diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. I understand that their difficulty with focusing can often lead them to fall behind academically. I understand that these children have the ability to learn but their education has to be tailored to gain and hold their attention, it has to be precise, and most importantly, it has to be presented in an interesting manner.
I am also raising two step children who are diagnosed with ADHD, and I fully understand the challenges that parents have when working with homework at home.
I am certified to teach in GA. My certification is valid until 7/1/2016. I have taught elementary since 2004. I have taught second through fifth.
