My love for teaching comes from my belief that learning not only can be but should be fun. How we learn in school is often uninspired and for many people tedious textbook assignments are the death of their interest in a subject. In my tutoring lessons for French and ESL/ESOL, I get to the heart of learning another language by taking an immersion approach that focuses less on written assignments (although there will be some) and more on improving conversational skills and learning vocabulary and grammar that is practical for everyday situations. My goal is that you don’t feel bogged down with words or verb conjugations to memorize and instead are able to speak and understand a bit of the language almost right away. The more you progress the more confidence you will have in your skills, and the more confidence you have the more enjoyment you’ll get from learning. And for me, there isn't too much out there more rewarding than watching someone grow and knowing that I played a part in that.
I think the best way to start tutoring someone is by getting to know what they hope to accomplish. An office worker wishing to improve their language skills in order to better communicate with clients will benefit from a different curriculum than a high schooler wanting to improve their test scores. By discussing beforehand what your motivation is for learning, the better I can plan my lessons around your individual needs.
I began studying French in 9th grade and went on to minor in it in college. I studied abroad in France my junior year and came back to tutor fellow students in French my senior year. After graduation I returned to France to work for seven months in primary schools. I also worked for two and a half years with a financial company, using my language skills to assist French Canadian clients. Aside of the year I spent tutoring French to college students, I have extensive experience working with both children and adults learn English as a second language in France, Peru, and India.
I am flexible as to where our lessons are held, be it at your own home, at a coffee shop, etc., as I believe it is crucial that you are comfortable and find your environment conducive to learning.
I look forward to hearing from you and playing a part in your success!
