Hello there!

My name is Dana. I taught 6-8 grade English/Language Arts for five years, and after that, I taught high school American Literature, AP English, and Honors English for five years. I was voted Teacher of the Year in 2009-2010. I am a certified teacher in Georgia in secondary English.

I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English and French (double major). My master's degree is from Harvard; I earned a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning.

I believe that in order for you to learn from me, you must trust me. As we work, I will learn about YOU - both as a person and as a student - in a way that embraces and nurtures your strengths while compassionately addressing your challenges. While we'll start working with your presenting concern (the reason you sought out a tutor), I continuously look for ways to engage and challenge - but not overwhelm - you on your path to success in academics and in life.

I've always excelled on standardized tests. In high school, I earned a combined score of 34 on the ACT. I am a member of Mensa (which admits entrance based on success on an IQ exam). My GRE scores placed me in the 98th percentile for quantitative reasoning (math) and the 85th percentile for verbal reasoning; I scored a perfect 6 for writing. I can teach you my means of preparation and my test taking strategies so YOU can achieve the score you're after!

My greatest passion in life is writing. In addition to my own writing, I love helping others improve their written efforts whether it is a tricky essay for course in school, professional writing for a demanding job, or creative writing that you hope to publish, I love guiding writers through the writing process. If you would like help with your writing in an editorial capacity without in person tutorials, I provide line editing and content editing (for lower rates than my standard tutoring rate). Reach out to me and tell me what you're looking for - if I believe I can help you, I will do my very best to do so.

Recently, I was featured on "Better Mornings Atlanta" as a guest to promote Wyzant and the different ways it helps families and students succeed.

I deeply believe in the transformational power of education. I left full time teaching to pursue my lifelong dream of writing, but through tutoring, I stay connected with young people and get to use my gift for teaching to help them reach their maximum potential. There are few greater joys than watching a young person conquer a goal, and I love being part of that process.

*** UPDATE August 2014***

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified teacher (Georgia, Secondary English grades 6-12), and as such, I have had coursework in the field of teaching students with special needs. ADD/ADHD is a predominant diagnosis in modern students, and I have taught countless students who struggle with its effects. Some have been learning under IEPS, some have simply had a physician's diagnosis, and some - most sadly - exhibited all the symptoms but had never been fully evaluated, leaving them to suffer with little extra help. I understand the triggers and distractors that impact a student's focus, and I can modify tutorial sessions to account for the ADD/ADHD student's learning style and attention struggles.

College Counseling

I taught high school for five years and have helped countless students as they navigate college writing. I have helped students prepare their college application essays, and I have helped many of my high school students succeed in their college writing classes once they go on to university.

Special Needs

I am a certified teacher (Georgia, Secondary English grades 6-12), and as such, I have had coursework in the field of teaching students with special needs. I have taught students with the following learning exceptionalities:

1. EBD
2. Specific LD
3. Dyslexia
4. ADD/ADHD
5. Significant gaps in basic knowledge/skills, students who are more than 5 years behind current grade level in reading/writing
6. MLD

Study Skills

I have worked with adolescent learners for over 10 years, many of whom struggle with organization, project management, prioritizing time and working within existing structural systems (school, classroom, etc). I design programs based on each student's strengths and challenges to empower each learner to be more successful and independent.

Her enthusiasm for teaching is matched only by her knowledge and skills. — Dana painstakingly worked with my son for several weeks, and she was worth every penny. I was initially struck by her enthusiasm for what she was doing. That kind of enthusiasm transfers to students. Then she was very knowledgeable about what the SAT tested and picked up on my son's weaknesses very quickly and zeroed in on them. She was patient and motivating. I highly recommend her.
