I am Ms. L.; if you prefer, you can call me Dana. I taught 6-8 grade English/Language Arts for five years, and after that, I taught high school American Literature, AP English, and Honors English for five years. I was voted Teacher of the Year in 2009-2010. I am a certified teacher in Georgia.
I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English and French (double major). My masters degree is from Harvard; I earned a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning.
I believe that in order for you to learn from me, you must trust me. As we work, I will learn about YOU - both as a person and as a student - in a way that embraces and nurtures your strengths while compassionately addressing your challenges. While we'll start working with your presenting concern (the reason you sought out a tutor), I continuously look for ways to engage and challenge - but not overwhelm - you on your path to success in academics and in life.
I've always excelled on standardized tests. In high school, I earned a combined score of 34 on the ACT. I am a member of Mensa (which admits entrance based on success on an IQ exam). My GRE scores placed me in the 98th percentile for quantitative reasoning (math) and the 85th percentile for verbal reasoning; I scored a perfect 6 for writing. I can teach you my means of preparation and my test taking strategies so YOU can achieve the score you're after!
I deeply believe in the transformational power of education. I left full time teaching to pursue my lifelong dream of writing, but through tutoring, I stay connected with young people and get to use my gift for teaching to help them reach their maximum potential. There are few greater joys than watching a young person conquer a goal, and I love being part of that process.
Let's get started!
