I am a tutor who wants students to understand what they are studying. I have worked with students in the Supplemental Instruction Program at Georgia State University and most of them complained with my requirements at the beginning, but at the end of the semester, most of them got A or even A+. They usually come to me and say, sorry we were complaining, but your method was helpful.
Working with younger students is very good and I want them to be engaged. My incentives are all centered in what they are studying in school. I want them to understand what they are studying and be able to clearly discuss the topic with their teachers/professors.
I recently had a student who wanted to improve her Portuguese because she would be leaving to Angola. When she arrived in Luanda and started talking Portuguese with her local colleagues, they were all surprised she could communicate that well. That is what she told me is the email she sent me from Angola. That is what I want my students to be. My students are my focus.
