Al W. is an engineer by education, but a Math Teacher for the last twenty-five years by choice and good fortune.

He has taught the entire High School Math curriculum, from Algebra 1 through AP Calculus, with the exception of AP Statistics. Al is especially effective in the advanced Algebra/Precalculus/AP Calculus sequence not only because of his background as a civil engineer, but because he is an AP Calculus Reader for the College Board. That means he scores the free response questions of the AP Calculus exam every year. So he knows exactly what's expected of students on the exam. In addition, Al is a Consultant for the National Math & Science Initiative, which means he holds AP Calculus workshops for students around the country, as well as workshops for AP Calculus teachers.

Finally, Al has taught the SAT Math Prep course at his high school for the last seven years, so he is very effective in getting students ready for that as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 in high school for eleven years, as well as tutoring individual students. I have also taught College Algebra at Georgia Perimeter College and tutored students there as well. Since I have created lessons in SMART Notebook for all my courses, I often use these resources for my individual tutoring sessions. I focus not only on the subject matter itself, but also on where my student is misunderstanding the material, so we can focus on that and correct it.

Calculus

I have taught Calculus at the high school and college level for 25 years, as well as tutoring individual students. I have taught AP Calculus for 7 years and been a Reader for the College Board for four years, reading and scoring the Free Response questions on the exams. So, I am uniquely qualified to tutor calculus, especially AP Calculus. Since I have created lessons in SMART Notebook for all my courses, I often use these resources for my individual tutoring sessions. I focus not only on the subject matter itself, but also on where my student is misunderstanding the material, so we can focus on that and correct it. In addition, I guide my students in AP Calculus exam taking technique to maximize their score.

Precalculus

I have taught Precalculus at the high school and college level for 25 years, as well as tutoring individual students. I am uniquely qualified to tutor Precalculus, because I not only teach the subject itself, but I also teach calculus, so I know what Precalculus students need to know for next year. Since I have created lessons in SMART Notebook for all my courses, I often use these resources for my individual tutoring sessions. I focus not only on the subject matter itself, but also on where my student is misunderstanding the material, so we can focus on that and correct it.

SAT Math

I developed the SAT Math Prep at my high school and have taught it for the last seven years. I also have tutored students for SAT Math for twenty years. In addition to teaching advanced math, I also have taught Algebra 1 and Geometry, both of which are stressed on the SAT. I have been a Reader for the College Board for four years, reading and scoring the free response questions on the AP Calculus exams. So, I am very familiar with the exam structure and philosophy of the College Board in creating exam questions, and that carries over to the SAT. When tutoring, I have my students take practice exams at home and score them themselves. Then, when we meet, we only review the questions they got wrong. This maximizes the value, both educationally and economically, of our time together. I focus not only on the subject matter itself, but also on where my student is misunderstanding the material, so we can focus on that and correct it. In addition, I guide my students in SAT exam taking technique to maximize their score.

Trigonometry

I have taught Trigonometry as part of Precalculus at the high school and college level for 25 years, as well as tutoring individual students. Since I have created lessons in SMART Notebook for all my courses, I often use these resources for my individual tutoring sessions. I focus not only on the subject matter itself, but also on where my student is misunderstanding the material, so we can focus on that and correct it.
