Experience:
I have a bachelor's degree in Microbiology from Ohio State University and a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health from Emory University.

I have two years of experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate level science courses, specifically focusing on biological sciences and environmental health. I also have extensive experience creating lesson plans and one-on-one consultations with students who need extra guidance.

I also love to write and have excellent grammar. I have experience editing students’ papers and reports and am great at giving instruction on how to improve writing style and technique.

I have served as a career mentor for students from various backgrounds. I can offer helpful college and career prep advice!

Approach:
Often times, students just need additional guidance outside of a classroom setting and personalized one-on-one instruction. At any tutoring session, I would like to be presented with the assignment or lesson that the student is having difficulty with (preferably BEFORE the session begins so I can prepare). The student should then be prepared to discuss what their first approach to solving the problem/completing the assignment would be. Then, we can work through the problem together and come to a solution. Every student is different and has a unique learning style. I attempt to work with students to develop the best study habits that work for their personality! In addition, I believe that students work best in a patient environment where they are given time to think about and discuss their approach. Usually, a student can figure out a problem on their own this way which helps develop confidence.

Career Development

I served as a mock interviewer for graduate students. I reviewed their resumes beforehand and prepared a set of interview questions to ask them. After the interviews, I gave the students feedback on what they should improve in regards to professional appearance, resume style and content, answers to questions, etc. Mock interviews are a great way to practice responses to interview questions in addition to gaining more confidence as an interviewee.

Microbiology

I received my bachelor's degree in Microbiology in 2010 and have served as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate level microbiology courses. I also helped create a new graduate course in microbiological lab techniques this past year at Emory. In addition, I have 4 years experience working in various positions requiring intensive microbiological work. Micro can seem daunting at first, but with a little practice and applied understanding, anyone can learn to love it!

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have 7 years experience using Microsoft PowerPoint in both a classroom and work-related setting. With PowerPoint presentations, less means more! There is no need to fill up the slides with heavy text- pictures/graphs/tables often work better at getting the point across. I am happy to instruct students on how to prepare and deliver powerful presentations using this handy tool!

Proofreading

I have several years experience proofreading and editing on multiple levels--from undergraduate and graduate students' essays to colleagues' grant proposals and scientific manuscripts. Proofreading is one of my strongest skills--I have an eye for detail!

Study Skills

I have several years experience serving as both a teaching assistant at the undergraduate and graduate level in addition to serving as a private tutor for high school students. First, I try to get a sense of how a student organizes his/her class notes and assignments in addition to how they normally study for a test. Often, students just need to acquire some additional study skills such as organization of class notes, reading assigned material ahead of time, studying for tests several days in advance (no procrastination!) as well as learning how to study the material in several different formats. Whether it be taking online quizzes, taking personal notes while reading a textbook, making flashcards- it is important that students attempt to completely immerse themselves in the material in order to fully make sense of it. I try to work with students to help them develop healthy study habits that work for their particular personality.

Writing

Writing is one of my passions and I believe it is certainly a powerful skill once developed. Anyone can learn to be an effective writer with a little bit of practice and a lot of creativity. I currently am working on submitting two scientific papers for publication and also write creatively in my spare time. Practice makes perfect!
