My name is Brett C., fifth grade teacher extraordinaire! (I added the 'extraordinaire' part myself, but according to my school district, I am a fifth grade teacher.)
I have taught 4th and 5th grades for the last six years, and I have teaching experience in all of the subjects. I hail from Texas (right outside of Houston and Austin), and I moved to Atlanta, GA, a year ago for a new adventure. I currently teach fifth grade at a public school in Buckhead.
I love teaching; it's a huge passion for me. I love teaching kids most of all, making a difference in their lives. It's what drives me to do my best.
If you have any other questions, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.
I have six years' experience teaching in elementary (2 years in 4th grade, 4 years in 5th grade). I have taught all subjects: math, reading/writing, science, and social studies. In my classroom, I attend to all learning styles. I have a wonderful relationship with my students because I appeal to how they learn best.
As a fifth grade teacher, who does have experience in teaching 4th grade as well, I'm well-versed in teaching math. I have been a self-contained teacher for three of the four years I've been a 5th grade teacher. I tutor in math after school one day a week as well.
I've taught Science for 3 of the 4 years I've taught 5th grade. I worked with a Science Interventionist at one school on labs and lesson plans, using the 5-E model. I've also taken numerous Science trainings.
I've taught grammar in every class I've ever taught, starting when I was a 4th grade teacher. My grammar guru is Jeff Anderson. His book on teaching grammar is phenomenal. I let them discover their own mistakes by asking them to analyze their writing by reading it out loud.
I've been a reading teacher since I started teaching seven years ago. Reading has always been a passion of mine, and so has teaching it. I love starting book clubs and getting students to love reading.
Vocabulary is so important for young ones. I teach Greek and Latin roots to my fifth graders so they can figure out the meanings of other words. We root through nonfiction and fiction texts to look for words we may not understand and analyze them.
I have taught writing every year that I've taught. I learned so much at a New Jersey Writing Project training that I came into my first year of teaching at a huge advantage. I offered ideas that veterans had never heard of. I love teaching writing and getting kids to write about their own experiences and share them.
