I am currently working as a middle school math teacher in Atlanta. I have seven years of classroom teaching experience in grades 6-8, and have been tutoring students of all ages for over 10 years.
Although many students enter my class claiming that they are not good at math, or that they do not like math, the majority of my students leave felling successful and optimistic about the next school year. Having the opportunity to tutor students one-on-one, or in small groups allows students to gain confidence in their math skills quickly.
Over the past seven years, I have learned how to develop the thinking of my students by scaffolding difficult concepts in order to make them accessible to every student, regardless of the academic levels. My educational philosophy is to teach students to understand the math conceptually, so that they will be able to apply the concept to any problem. Through teaching, I have found that if students understand the meaning behind the math, they will be able to answer any questions involving that concept.
My dedication to teaching for understanding rather than teaching ticks or memorization has allowed my students to achieve at very high levels. This school year, 95% of my students on the westside of Atlanta met state standards on the CRCT, with 43% of them exceeding standards. While teaching in Chicago, my students grew an average of 2.5 years in one academic year (according to the NWEA MAP assessment), and 98% of my 8th graders passed the ISAT. Most importantly, I help to build high levels of self confidence and a love of learning in my students. I strive to be the best I can, and continuously reflect on my practice, adjusting course as needed.
I look forward to working with you and your child!
