I have been tutoring for five years, and have taken the role of mentor in many of my jobs as a tutor. Students find it easy to talk to me and open up about their daily lives. I think it is important to create a stress free environment, as it allows for the student to relax and feel more comfortable. This approach also yields better results, because when they are more open-minded and free to be creative, they put more effort into their work as well.

I have two main rules: there is a time and a place for everything, and students should try first on their own so I see some effort. I start off very hands on, teaching them "how to survive," )meaning they must learn how to find the answer or come to an educated conclusion on their own without much guidance). As my students continue with me, I become less hands-on, allowing them to to use the skills of finding cues and the knowledge of how to research and come to an appropriate conclusion. I like my students to be expressive and eager to learn.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

After struggling in math for the first half of my high school career, I pushed myself by enrolling in an Advanced Placement Statistics Class and Pre-Calculus class. I mastered mathematics up to 12th grade level and I am able to teach students at a more understandable level, because I was once in their shoes. I am able to help students decipher through word problems, algebraic problems and trigonometric equations.

Elementary (K-6th)

Most of my students have started with me at the second or third grade level. I have tutored students in the early stages of their school careers for the past five years. All my students' parents have seen significant increases not only in their grades, but also in their work ethic and testing abilities.

Elementary Science

I have always exceeded standards in grade school and undergrad in all my science courses. I have pushed my students to meet and exceed all standards for their own science classes. I love working on projects with my students and getting creative with scientific concepts.

English

I am a scholar at English language studies and literature. I have only taken Honors, Accelerated and Advanced Placement English courss, and have received scholarly awards with regards to those classes. My students have seen major improvements in their writing skills and creativity once I have taught them how to write and draw in the audience or research the supporting details.

Grammar

Grammar has been an important foundation in my parents' household, since my mother was an English teacher. I have always exceeded standards for Grammar in my English classes and papers. I am very thorough in editing and picking up on mistakes and constant poor grammatical errors. Under my tutelage students are able to learn how to catch their own mistakes and rectify them permanently.

Literature

A writing scholar in my own right, I have had some of my poems published at my middle school, high school, local newspaper, and at my college. I am very intrigued by literary works, and can broaden my students' horizons with the high level of knowledge I have in Literary arts.

Soccer

I grew up in a family that has played soccer for years. My grandfather, uncles, and father are all active soccer coaches, and they all trained me. I played soccer for four years at my high school, where I became captain of the Junior Varsity team within my first season and Captain of my Varsity Team by the second season. I still return to my high school to help my coach train his new teams.

Study Skills

I used to suffer from test anxiety from elementary to middle school. My dad coached me through basic test-taking skills and enrolled me in PSAT classes starting in 7th grade. I learned many vocabulary cues and other heuristics that I have passed on to my students. My testing ability has increased immensely from 7th grade through college. Now,I am able to target test-taking problems in my students and work on their skills for improvement.

Writing

I have excelled in many different writing styles, such as: narratives, fictional, non-fictional, historical fictional, and research papers. I have one published reasearch paper from my sophomore year in high school through a major internship on Inventory Management. My students have seen major improvements in their writing skills and creativity once I have taught them how to write and draw in the audience or research the supporting details.
