I have been tutoring for five years, and have taken the role of mentor in many of my jobs as a tutor. Students find it easy to talk to me and open up about their daily lives. I think it is important to create a stress free environment, as it allows for the student to relax and feel more comfortable. This approach also yields better results, because when they are more open-minded and free to be creative, they put more effort into their work as well.
I have two main rules: there is a time and a place for everything, and students should try first on their own so I see some effort. I start off very hands on, teaching them "how to survive," )meaning they must learn how to find the answer or come to an educated conclusion on their own without much guidance). As my students continue with me, I become less hands-on, allowing them to to use the skills of finding cues and the knowledge of how to research and come to an appropriate conclusion. I like my students to be expressive and eager to learn.
