I recently moved to Atlanta from the UK, where I completed my PhD in Anthropology looking at the effects of long-term drought on inter-ethnic conflict in northern Kenya. My tutoring experience is quite varied, in terms of subject matter and age ranges, but I have always focused on trying to make the subject matter engaging, demonstrating concepts in a unique way so that the student is able to internalize the information, and also emphasizing organization and structured learning - two principles that the student can apply to his / her education and are beneficial life skills to have. My teaching / tutoring work is as follows:
- Advanced 3rd grade math team (up to Geometry)
- Calculus I for university freshmen
- English language (spoken / written British and American English) for a Chilean telecommunications business and for Chile's Minister of Mining
- Introductory coursework in human origins and diversity, human genetics and population, and human health and ecology for 1st and 2nd year undergraduates
Furthermore, I attended high school in the United States, and I graduated as class valedictorian. For high school students, I understand the rigors of high school coursework and what it takes to get ahead - not just passing a particular course, instead, managing the coursework in a way that prepares the student for further academic pursuits. For elementary school students, I look to provide the fundamental building blocks of a successful student, and most importantly, to try to instill a passion for learning across all subject matters.
