Hello,
My name is Adrienne and I am currently attending Kennesaw State University. I am a Mathematics major and am graduating May 2013! I am scheduled to take the Math Middle Grades GACE test in March 2013 and then the general Mathematics GACE (for high school) in May 2013. I have been tutoring for years and really enjoy the experience.
My experience:
I have tutored all grade levels from Kindergarten to College Level Mathematics. I even helped a mother of 9 home school her children, which ranged in ages from 1 year to 13 years old.
My Tutoring Style:
Math is probably one of the most complex subjects and students have a hard time relating to it. I try to make my tutoring lessons unique by finding out my students strengths and interest and use that in the lessons. When the student relates to the subject it's much easier to grasp the concepts. (Also it's much easier to answer the questions, "When will I ever use this?")
When tutoring a new student, I like to schedule a meeting prior to starting tutoring, to introduce myself, get an idea of what the student needs help with and gather material for lessons. I am open to communicating with the student's teacher to get an idea of where they may struggle and test dates. I believe this meeting makes the student more comfortable with the tutor and more willing to communicate with the tutor.
I also like to give monthly progress reports to the parents to communicate what we have worked on, what needs more work, and any issues that I may have (such as the student not completing homework). I believe this leaves the lines of communication open between the parents and tutor.
For the college level students, instead of a progress report, I like set aside time once a month to discuss how I could better serve them as a tutor and things I think they could do to improve our tutoring sessions.
