I'm an experienced educator, editor, and performing artist, and I can help you meet your goals for yourself and/or your student. Whether you're looking for academic support, editorial assistance and writing coaching, or musical development, I will do whatever it takes to prepare you to succeed.
I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and English writing. I'm certified in K-12 English and K-12 Music and have taught both subjects both in traditional schools as well as through extra-curricular programs. Because I have worked at a Reading and Learning Clinic and a university Academic Resource Center I have developed many skills to help students with learning differences. I believe that everyone can learn and that people's learning styles can become strengths.
As a tutor, I do more than teach or coach. I listen and observe; these perceptive skills help me understand what my students understand so that we can fill learning gaps efficiently and effectively. Although I specialize in English Language Arts (reading, writing, literature, grammar, etc.), I have almost a decade of extensive tutoring experience in multiple subjects, including math through Algebra II. I always incorporate organization and study skills into my tutoring sessions so that students gain the ability to succeed independently as we progress. Typically I have tutored K-12 students, mostly middle and high school, but I have also helped younger students and college students improve their grades and their understanding. High school seniors and college students can expect sessions that will prepare them for college-level writing, whether it is for college applications or thesis dissertations. Higher-education students looking to improve their writing can read more about my editorial coaching below.
As an editor and writing coach, I help graduate students and academic professionals prepare papers for publication, proposals for grants, and presentations for international conferences. I have revised manuscripts that appear in major publications such as Science, and I have helped prepare grant applications that were awarded millions of dollars in funding. Whether you simply need a second set of eyes to make sure your writing is polished and perfect or whether you need more substantial guidance for revision, I will give your work my scrupulous attention. Writers who are English language learners or who speak multiple languages fluently have found my work particularly helpful, and every writer I have worked with has commented that my coaching improved their overall writing skills, not just the paper we worked on.
As a classically trained musician with a flair for musical theatre and jazz, I aim to prepare music students for the discipline required by artistry. Before earing my bachelor's degree in music, I also earned a certificate of artistry in musical theatre. I began studying voice fifteen years ago, and I sing professionally for weddings, funerals, church services, private parties, and festivals. In addition to teaching middle school music and chorus, I have worked outside the school system. Since 2005, I have led musical theatre workshops through southeastern Louisiana reaching over 5,000 students through Enriching Arts, a program that partners with summer camps and schools. Since I am new to Atlanta, I'm expanding Enriching Arts to include private studio lessons in voice, beginning piano, music theory, and songwriting and composition. Voice students can expect to receive classical training. I believe that classical training prepares singers to sing any style (including pop) with techniques that protect their vocal health and expand their range and strength. Beginning piano students can expect to learn appropriate repertoire, practice habits, sight-reading, improvisations and performance skills. All music students can expect to learn how to read music (including jazz/pop lead sheet notation), ear training, and the basics of music theory and history.
Regardless of whether you hire me as a tutor, an editor, or a music instructor, you can also expect the following policies and practices:
- respect and acceptance for all individuals and all learning styles;
- open and frequent communication;
- patient and efficient pacing of tutoring sessions or lessons - we will make the most of every minute;
- innovative interventions that make learning memorable and fun;
- individualized learning plans that meet students where they are, challenge them to grow, and celebrate progress.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like more information about my offerings. I'm passionate about my subjects and about helping others, and I am happy to tailor a program to suit your needs. I can't wait to meet you!
