Hello,

My name is Shannon and I've been taking and excelling on standardized tests for over two decades. Students in my sessions study not only test-content, but many strategies and good habits necessary for successful test-taking, language learning, and/or writing. My students are always surprised at how quickly they improve by making only minor adjustments.

A little bit about me: I graduated with honors from UCLA where I obtained a B.A. in Political-Science (International Affairs with a Minor in Anthropology-Chinese Studies.) After spending three years traveling, teaching English, and studying in East Asia, I returned to school to obtain a J.D. from the University of Miami. In 2010, I took and passed the Georgia state bar exam and have been practicing law ever since.

Since 2008, I have taught TOEFL, SSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, ESL, English grammar, beginning Chinese, and academic and professional writing to students at test-prep and language schools throughout Metro-Atlanta. That’s right! Although, I specialize in test prep, English grammar, reading, and writing, I am fluent in Mandarin. Writing

Students in my class learn quick and easy methods for 1) brainstorming and developing a solid thesis, 2) organizing and outlining a draft and 3) adding one's personal flare to the final product. I simplify the writing process so that many of my students are able to dramatically improve their abilities in just a few lessons. Writing is fun when you know how!

ACT English

The ACT English Test assesses your knowledge of English grammar and writing.

My classes are designed to give test candidates exactly what they need to do well on the grammar section and to teach a writing format and style that will get top marks on the "optional" (check college requirements) essay section.

ACT Science

The ACT Science section requires strong critical reading skills more than actual science knowledge (although there's some of that on the test too.)

I work with my students on reading and scanning for details, sketching quick charts and graphs to keep track of information read and using deductive reasoning to answer the questions accurately and quickly for the best score possible.

Chinese

I am a non-native speaker of Chinese with over 10 years of formal and informal studies in Chinese. I took many university courses in Mandarin and Cantonese and lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong, where those languages are spoken, for several years.

Public Speaking

As an attorney, I practice public speaking skills frequently, whether in court, at administrative hearings, or before audiences of potential clients. My experience as a debate team teacher to summer day-camp students also comes in handy.

Career Development

I study this field voraciously and have a wealth of resources in materials upon which I draw. I help my students polish or build their resumes and create a networking plan that increases their visibility to others in their chosen field. I can also help students define their interests and personal goals, and match them with various career options to explore.

College Counseling

I've been helping local and foreign students with their college and grad school applications for several years now. I work with students on choosing colleges based on their interests and financial needs, managing deadlines, and writing and editing admissions and scholarship essays. If applicable, I can help "undecideds" make the most of a "gap" year, to save money while trying to determine career interests.

Anthropology

I took many of the courses required of the anthropology major at UCLA before I changed my major to Political-Science with a Minor in Anthropology. I still retain much of that knowledge and enjoy the subject immensely. I studied mainly cultural and linguistic anthropology. I took a forensic course, but would not feel confident in my abilities enough to tutor.

Archaeology

One of my favorite subjects of all time! I studied Archaeology as part of my Anthropology Minor at UCLA. I averaged A's in my minor courses and still retain much of the information learned.

Bar Exam

Are you worried about the essay section of the bar exam? I passed the Georgia state bar exam a few years ago. The essay section is not super difficult (in relation to the MBE) but does require the ability to 1) see the issues presented 2) state them and 3) deal with them in organized and efficient way REALLY FAST. :)

I offer students plenty of help and practice with the items 1-3 above so that on test-day they'll be armed with the tools they need to pass the essay section of the exam...

ISEE

I’ve been teaching Jr. High and High School aged-students how to take their private school admissions exams since 2008. I teach all sections of the ISEE test (Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comp, and Essay) EXCEPT Quantitative Reasoning.
