Thank you for your interest in my WyzAnt profile.
My academic credentials include undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study at the University of Georgia. My undergraduate degree was awarded in consumer journalism (current title). However, I realized my passion for teaching and decided to pursue a master’s degree in education. I have since completed certification programs at UGA in middle grades education and educational leadership. I earned my doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern’s program in Columbia, SC, seven years ago.
My experience with tutoring and teaching includes nineteen years as a classroom teacher, mostly in the middle grades. I am a National Board certified teacher in early adolescence English language arts. My teaching practices have been with reading, ELA, social studies and ESOL. I have additional years of experience working in schools as an instructional leader and training teachers. Some of my most enjoyable and rewarding experiences have been when I worked one-on-one or with small groups in tutoring situations after school, summer school, or during school in pull-out sessions.
Despite the fact that I have a number of years as an educator, my most valuable experience has been as a mother to two very different kinds of students. I have a daughter who is a gifted learner that is now in medical school. My son is dyslexic and has other learning challenges, and he has graduated from high school and is working. Working with both of my children has shaped my ideas and overall approach for tutoring. Learning is very personal, and children have specific needs according to their strengths and weaknesses. It would be my job as a tutor to discover those needs and address them.
