Hello parents and future students,
My name is Jana and I am an elementary teacher in the Atlanta area. I have more than three years of experience as a classroom teacher and I have found that although teaching in a whole group setting is great, my students benefit so much more from small group or one-on-one instruction. I want to start tutoring full time because I really crave that one-on-one time with my students so that I know that they fully understand the concepts. Teaching children to read is one of my specialties. I perform guided reading and I am trained to take running records to find where exactly the child is in their reading level and if their are any specific reading problems that need to be addressed. Running records also show growth in reading over time. I like to share the results with the students so that they are a participant in their learning and understand that it takes practice to become a good reader.
My other specialty is helping children become better writers. This includes handwriting practice, as well as structuring written responses. The subject of writing is sometimes intimidating for young children, especially if they are having problems with reading or holding writing instruments. I have many strategies to help children overcome these obstacles. I will also be glad to write notes to their teacher to let them know what strategies are working in the tutoring sessions so that we can work as a team to achieve success for the student.
I believe learning should be fun. I am a musician and an artist so I love to use creative and kinesthetic strategies to help my students with many different learning styles. My goal is to find out the talents and interests of the student so that they can use their strengths to help them achieve their goals and have fun while learning.
I like to teach children ages 5 - 10 or adults. If you think I am the tutor for you, please contact me!
