You are never too old to learn. I went back to school at 47 years old and became an adjunct instructor. For 7 years, I taught at Dekalb Technical College, where I was in the general education department, teaching English and Reading/Study Skills to students entering the college who did not yet possess the necessary skills to get into their programs of study. Also included in my past teaching experience is teaching ESL out of my home for several years. I understand the struggles of many people who come from other countries, as I have been married to a woman from another country

I am a firm believer in repetition, and believe in doing it until the item is grasped. I would much prefer a person having a lot of knowledge of some things, rather than a little to nothing of a lot of things. The teacher must also impress the importance of a student's need to practice and study on his or her own, rather than thinking they have to do nothing because the teacher will cut open the student's head and pour the knowledge into it.

I believe in teaching that students have a responsibility to learn, and things are not always easy. They get out what they put into things. Since I was 47 when I went back to school, I was a relatively slow learner, and I had to do things repeatedly until I learned. It is often a chore, at first, but it becomes much easier when a person has developed the habit and truly wants to successfully achieve his or her goal(s).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

Basic math should be an essential tool, not only for math purposes, but also for developing critical thinking skills. I have done volunteer work in GED preparation, helping friends (other teachers) with preparing students for basic math on GED in the past. Also, while I was in school, I taught some of my classmates, so it would help them pass the course.

English

I taught developmental English at a technical college in GA to students needing skills in order to get into their programs of study.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL/ESOL for several years at home, where I have a small classroom that seats up to 4, complete with a white board.

Grammar

I taught developmental English at a technical college in GA to students needing skills in order to get into their programs of study.

Macintosh

I used to be a lab assistant for my teacher, and worked my way into full-time employment where I taught on Macs. I still use Macs to this day, as well as PCs. My personal computer is an I-Mac 27 inch, and I am running one other monitor with it, as it helps when doing certain programs.

Reading

I taught developmental English at a technical college in GA to students needing skills in order to get into their programs of study. This also included study skills.

Spelling

Everyone should be able to spell, as it is an important element in communication. Phonics is also an important item when learning/knowing how to spell. It is important to teach the person to sound it out by syllables, as this will help them greatly.

Vocabulary

I taught developmental English at a technical college in GA to students needing skills in order to get into their programs of study.
