As a middle school math teacher and a member of the Teach for America Americorps program, my desire has been to make all students love succeeding in math. After closing out the 2011-2012 school year with great math growth being shown by most of my 119 7th grade math students, my belief of math being a learned and teachable thought process was proven. Coming up with relatable ways to explain and model different math concepts has been my strength. Using homemade 'playdough' to model cross-sections in geometry, analyzing current sports teams' statistics to grasp data collection methods, and creating a dream-home blue-print project to find missing dimensions using algebra are just some of my ways to get students to relate to the world around them.
I also really love to help students succeed in their upper-level math classes in high school and college. During my time as a math major at the University of New Hampshire, much of my time was dedicated to tutoring other college students and friends. For about 20 hours each week, during my junior and senior years at college, I worked at the University Mathematics Center which aided students in their discrete, pre-calculus, trigonometry, Algebra I & II, Calculus I & II, and Differential Equations classes. As the Assistant Instructor to Algebra II at UNH, I got my first taste of teaching math and loved the rewards it could bring.
