As a tutor in an after school program for challenged youth in a struggling community of Atlanta, I was introduced to a young man named Harry.Harry was tall, athletic, clean cut and gracious. He was also timid, unsure, distracted and as awkward as a fifteen year old could be. Harry had been socially promoted due to his age and athletic prowess, so when we met he was in the seventh grade reading at a fourth grade level. I never thought of the words shame or embarrassment. I thought: I've got to make this engrossing, amusing, worthwhile and empowering. Harry needed to feel totally at ease in our learning environment, that he was not going to be judged or hurried and that I was totally on his side. I always assume double positions-the tutor and the cheering squad. I have a far reaching background in theater and that incorporated with literary text and human interaction is a can't miss. I also listen intently. Together Harry and I brought his literary comprehension up three grade levels in as many months. His confidence in all his scholastic endeavors soared and his father made a special trip from out of town to meet me and thank me personally. His school's guidance counselor called commenting on the change in his approach to his schoolwork. I am a dedicated, flexible, reliable, punctual, and organized team player. With rigorous, engaging, high quality instruction I reinforce learning and enable struggling students to thrive. I encourage curiosity and most of all thinking "outside of the box." Damon and my son worked together on SAT preparation, specifically reading comprehension (although they covered all areas of the SAT). Damon was very well-prepared for the sessions and always prompt, and he provided the materials my son needed for rigorous study sessions. He communicated with me often via email and phone calls, and shared concrete examples regarding the various challenges and successes he observed during the sessions.
I believe the tutoring time spent working with Damon will result in a SAT score my son is pleased with, but more importantly, I believe Damon demonstrated to my son the improved results that can be made in academic work if one applies focus, enthusiasm, and commitment to the task. I highly recommend Damon as a motivated and accomplished tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
We all know what the ACT is, but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans if a student does not know how to take the exam. First and foremost, answer the question being asked! I know that may sound like common sense, but some of the questions on the ACT seem like they could have a few answers that could possibly be correct. Nope. You've got to hit the hit the nail on the head with calm, strategic thinking. If you approach it with the training of how it is prepared , and how to read (not skim) the questions, you will answer them correctly and you can fly!
I am nationally certified in 15 individual disciplines of English; most recently to teach English as a foreign or second language. I have been tutoring Language Arts for almost 18 years, working with children and adults. I was an active volunteer in the Reading is Fundamental Program sponsored by the YMCA for almost three years in Charleston, South Carolina. My literary mentors are alumna of Harvard College, Brown University, Cornell and the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Public speaking has been an integral part of my life for over 25 years. From well paid modeling jobs in New York City when I represented consumer brands like Levi's Silvertab Jeans or Close-Up Toothpaste to being invited to speak at human rights rallies and HIV clinics, the etiquette and techniques of my education in public speaking have propelled some would be ordinary occasions into the realm of the unforgettable. Competent communication, competent leadership, mentoring, motivating people, encouraging creativity and philanthropy are just some of the rewards in this service of giving. When The National Speakers Association acknowledged my essay writing with their highest award of the year in 2007 I could not have been more humbled.
Reading is defined as the action or practice of reading. Along with that are the interpretation, comprehension and pronunciation of words and letters. Literacy, literary knowledge and understanding text are the fundamentals and foundation of every subject, topic and realm of study in our world. The importance of having the intellectual facilities to decipher what is read and to voice that, in any occasion, cannot be measured in monetary increments. It is indeed priceless.
The SAT Critical Reading portion of the exam is an analysis of one's ability to understand and answer questions PRECISELY, based on a prior passage given. The student must focus on relevant and outstanding words, phrases and points of reference. Read slowly and intently, reviewing as needed. Vocabulary is crucial for two words may be good choices to answer the multiple choice question but you must choose the best ONE. As far as the essay goes, there will be a prompt. I strongly suggest using examples from life experiences, a favorite topic you enjoy reading and/or researching or something in current affairs that you feel passionate about to express in your essay. Avoid religion and politics at all costs. Make a clear thesis statement, make your point(s), allow for opposing views and come full circle with a closing statement or paragraph that bolsters your position.
The essay portion of the SAT is designed to determine whether a student can develop a meaningful essay on the spot. Twenty-five minutes is given to develop and explain your point of view on the issue presented on the test. This is called a personal essay. The writer can use examples from their studies or personal experience bank or both. Here is the chance to distinguish yourself. Insiders tip: making a withdrawal from the personal experience account may not bring forth the happiest memories, but through your essay writing, it's about detailing what happened that brought about change.
I have been trained in Acting in New York, Los Angeles, Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA. I teach Meisner Technique at The West End Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, where I also coach privately. In television and commercial studies, I studied with Richard Reed in New York. I have been a member of SAG/AFTRA for 20 years.
I am nationally certified as a proofreader and editor/copy editor. My job is to make writers' musings, stories, instructions and explanations linear and secure so to hold readers attention throughout the duration of the literary or otherwise offering. A precise, engrossing, well written piece of prose is a major confidence booster to/for the author. I should know; in the last year alone I ghost wrote a memoir, edited and formatted a book about spirituality after trauma and proofread Dr. Linda Taylor's (Oglethorpe University) forthcoming novel.
