Hello!
I am available to tutor English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish, and Portuguese.
I graduated from College of Charleston, SC, in 2007 with a double major in Spanish and International Business. I studied abroad in Mexico for one month, Chile for five months, and have traveled and lived in various Spanish-speaking countries. I was a Spanish tutor in college for almost two years, I taught Spanish 2 for one year at a private boarding high school in Indiana, and I have been a freelance Spanish tutor in Atlanta for two years, mainly working with high school students and adults.
After graduating from college, I studied Portuguese in southern Brazil for six months while living with local Brazilians and Portuguese exchange students. I also worked and lived in Rio de Janeiro for five months last year as part of an internship for graduate school (I just completed my Masters in Anthropology). My only Portuguese tutoring experience has been on a freelance basis in Atlanta with adults.
After returning from my first six months of study in Brazil in 2008, I moved to Thailand and took a 140-hour certification course to Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). After receiving my TESOL certification, I taught English to Thai high school students at a private Catholic school for a few months before returning back to the US.
I look forward to tutoring children, teenagers, and adults in any of the three subject areas I mentioned above. My methods for tutoring vary on the individual learning style of the student, what their personal goals are, and what they are trying to achieve. I like to learn about students challenges and interests and create personalized strategies that allow me to teach the material in a relevant way that means something to them, and for the student to engage and activate the material covered throughout the session.
