Hi Everyone! I'm Alicia, and I grew up just south of Atlanta and graduated from SCAD in Savannah in 2008, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion with an Accessory Design minor. During my 4 year study there, I learned advanced techniques in clothing and accessory construction, surface embellishment, draping, patternmaking, and the business of fashion, as well as a solid foundation in drawing, design and art history. I later spent four years in the New York City fashion industry, selling textiles to designers there, before moving back to Atlanta. These days, I enjoy making clothes and accessories for myself and my friends (if they're lucky) and drawing in my sketchbook for inspiration and meditation.

I would love to teach adults and teens about sewing and/or drawing.

For those interested in sewing, I could help you turn your ideas and designs into reality with either beginner or intermediate level pattern drafting, fabric selection, machine operation and construction tutoring. For example, I recently helped a friend craft a custom dust cover for her kitchen mixer, while introducing her to the basic operation of her home sewing machine. I can make a variety of different products including all types of apparel, interior decorations like curtains and pillows, and some light accessories like bags and cloth hats (unless you have a more heavy-duty machine that can power through leather, in which case I could show you how to operate that as well). I'm always happy to lend the use of my machine, tools, supplies, etc.

For those interested in drawing, I can help you improve your life drawing/ observational drawing skills by working with you through various exercises that I myself learned in the 7 years of drawing classes I took in high school and college, studying things like gesture, negative space, value, measuring techniques, human proportion, perspective, etc. I can help you develop your sketchbook, portfolio, or complete a longer, special project that you have been dreaming of. I usually draw in pencil and marker, but I can help you develop your skills in other media like charcoal, oil pastel, ballpoint pen, whatever suits your fancy. I would ask that you provide the disposable materials like paper, sketchbooks and your chosen medium.

Please send me a message if you need any more information or have any questions at all. I hope I've given you an insight into my interests and passions and why I'd make a great tutor- by helping you discover or re-discover creativity. Thanks for reading!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

My Bachelor's degree from SCAD required me to complete a strong foundation of art, design and architectural history coursework: Pre-Renaissance Art, Post-Renaissance Art, Modern/ Contemporary Art, Ethnographic Art, History of Fashion, and other historical reinforcements in the various design courses that I took. I also lived in New York City for 4 years and took many opportunities to view some of the most famous works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. I can help you identify the aspects of certain styles and techniques that distinguish one artistic movement from another, one time period from another, one geographic area from another, or one artist from another. I can also help you understand the contexts for these works such as social and political movements, available materials, and philosophies of the time periods in which the works were made.

Drawing

I began taking advanced art classes in seventh grade and, over the course of high school and college, have taken so many drawing courses and completed so many drawing exercises, that my work could fill the Louvre. I can help you improve your observational/ life drawing skills by working through those same exercises, studying things like gesture, contour drawing, chiaroscuro, negative space, perspective, proportion, etc. I can help you attain basic drawing skills, give you tips on developing an interesting and dynamic sketchbook, or even dive into a larger drawing that you may have been dreaming of. I prefer to draw in pencil and marker, but can work with you in any drawing media such as charcoal, pen, oil pastel, colored pencil, anything you'd like to work with.

Sewing

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion with an Accessory Design minor. I know how to use, and can teach you to use a variety of different sewing machines: basic home machines, sergers, industrial machines, stretch stitch, zigzag stitch, cover stitch machines, etc. I am not as familiar with the computerized/ programmable machines, since they vary so much from model to model, but give me a night with the owner's manual and I'll be an overnight expert.

For aspiring designers, crafters or quilters, I can help you make your idea or drawing into a finished product by working with you on making a pattern, selecting the fabric & notions, and finally cutting and assembling your item. Whether you are dreaming of the perfect dress but can't find it in stores, or just want to be able to make your own home decorations to save money, whatever the case I can help you develop your project from start to finish.

Finally, if you don't want to be the next Versace but just want to know some sewing basics so that you can repair your worn clothing or do some basic alterations, I can help you with that too.

Great Tutor — Alicia came to our home to teach my 14 year old how to use her sewing machine. She spent an hour (or more!) with her and seemed really thorough. My daughter enjoyed Alicia's teaching and she felt more comfortable with the machine afterward. We look forward to employing her services again. ...
