An M.A. in English or Comparative Literature requires a superior command of the English language from vocabulary and syntax to sophisticated writing skills. While a graduate student at UCLA, I taught World Literature, which required a command of the literary criticism on the works I taught, as well as expertise in teaching English Composition. Subsequently I taught English Composition at the community college level and was an editorial assistant for the University of Wisconsin Press and a proofreader for an editorial firm. As a high school teacher, I taught English Literature and Composition.
I am qualified to support you in all elements of English from grammar and vocabulary to advanced reading and writing.
Teaching ESL later in my career has been a natural and rewarding transition for me. I am able to apply 15 years of foreign language teaching and training to the ESL setting. I am ESOL-endorsed by the state of Georgia and have seven years experience teaching ESOL/ESL.
As an ESL teacher I not only bring my foreign language and ESL backgrounds but also a Master's in Comparative Literature and English teaching at the college and high school levels.
I am qualified and experienced in teaching the English language from the most basic elements such as phonics, spelling and pronunciation all the way to college-level reading, writing, and speaking.
ESL students have the advantage of being immersed in their target language, but at the same time, they face the constant pressure to learn English in order to function in our society. This is true for one of my clients who is the director of international finance for a corporation in Atlanta. As her teacher, I am always aware of the daily pressure she feels at work to communicate in English--her second language. I am also aware that English can be a challenging language to learn.
My priorities are to put you at ease and to pace the learning in manageable segments so that you don't feel overwhelmed, confused or frustrated. You may need English support in your academic subjects, you may be a professional who needs help with the language used in your field, or you may need English for social or everyday needs. In any of these cases, I am well-qualified to help you.
Finally, I can't stress enough that my own experience with second, third and fourth language learning is an invaluable asset in my work with students. My personal experience as a language learner has given me uncommon insight into the needs and feelings of my ESL students.
As I mentioned in my free response, I have a Master's in Comparative Literature, which is similar to a Masters in English. By reading my subject description for English, you will see that I am well qualified in all aspects of English teaching, including grammar.
In addition to my training and experience in English itself, I took four semesters of college Latin, which gave me an even stronger grasp of English grammar. I also believe that my study of three romance languages has strengthened my command of English grammar because they are strongly related.
The ability to make grammar rules and constructions understandable to students is the key to being a successful teacher of grammar. Students must also practice applying grammar in their writing in order reach the point where they barely need to think about grammar when they write. My background in English and foreign language teaching makes me an expert teacher of grammar.
I am passionate about the Italian language! My family is from the Le Marche and Veneto regions of Italy, and I spent my childhood in an Italian immigrant community listening to a lot of spoken Italian. Later, when I was in high school, I discovered that I excelled in languages and made it a goal to learn Italian.
I have been studying Italian and practicing it for several weeks every summer in Italy for ten years. There is nothing I enjoy more than conversing with native Italian speakers!
What sets me apart from many tutors is my foreign language teaching career and my personal experience as a learner of three foreign languages.
I am rated advanced in Italian proficiency. If you are a beginning or intermediate Italian student, I am qualified to teach you to converse, read, write and comprehend spoken Italian using correct vocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation.
Since high school I knew I wanted to be a Spanish teacher. I was a talented linguist with a thirst for learning the Spanish language and felt that teaching Spanish was a natural profession for me.
As your Spanish tutor, I offer a B.A. in Spanish from San Jose State University (with a 4.0 in Spanish) and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from UCLA, where I specialized in Latin American Literature. I also bring with me a sixteen-year career as a Spanish teacher, and although I recently retired, I am still certified to teach Spanish K-12.
Apart from my expertise in teaching Spanish, I speak the language as fluently as I speak English and have a generic, native accent. (Most natives guess that I'm from Argentina.)
My expertise lies in making Spanish grammar accessible to Spanish learners. I have been told by college-educated Hispanics that I have a broad and deep grasp of the grammatical structure of Spanish. The fifteen years I spent teaching high school Spanish gave me a wealth of tools for making lessons engaging and effective. The variety of students I taught and the innumerable challenges we faced taught me when to slow down, try a new approach or provide new challenges.
Whether you are a high school or college Spanish student or a professional needing to become proficient in Spanish for your work, I am well qualified to help you reach your goals.
If you have read my free response and my subject descriptions of English, ESOL and Literature, you have seen that I have taught English Composition at the high school and college levels. Also, as an elementary ESOL teacher, I taught the most basic elements of writing, including spelling, punctuation and capitalization and supported students as they practiced descriptive, persuasive and narrative writing. I can teach you how to brainstorm your ideas for a writing project, organize them and back them up with evidence for a coherent and engaging written work. I can also show you how to proofread and re-write for a polished final product.
