I have worked as a professional tutor for the past twenty years, helping students in the United States, Japan, and Spain to reach their educational goals and their dreams. I have a BS in Education and an MFA in Fine Arts, and I have spent my life working with students from elementary school through university and with working professionals who want to improve their English language skills.
My areas of specialization are English grammar, reading skills, vocabulary study, writing skills, and test preparation - SSAT, SAT, ACT. I have also tutored students in study and organizational skills, which helped them become more successful students. I have proven results in my methods, and have seen a student raise her SAT score by 200 points. I am patient and compassionate, and I greatly admire anyone who is trying to learn. I hope you will consider me
when you need a tutor. I will be happy to work with you and to help you achieve success.
Your English Teacher
One of my areas of specialization is teaching English grammar, which I have done for over fifteen years. A knowledge of grammar is essential to understanding the parts of speech and how they are used in sentences and paragraphs to create meaning. A good foundation in grammar enhances the study of vocabulary and reading and writing skills. Grammar is also an important component of any standardized test in English. I also teach spelling and mechanics, while teaching writing skills, as well as editing and revising skills to polish final essays. In my tutoring I address the essential skills of English grammar, vocabulary study, reading and writing skills, spelling, mechanics, editing and revising essays, and the study of literature.
I am a certified and experienced English as a Second Language teacher and tutor who has worked with foreign students in the United States, Japan, and Spain.
I am able to teach grammar simply and clearly so that you gain confidence in using it in speaking and writing. In addition, I will help you to improve your reading skills by building your vocabulary and understanding the structure and meaning of sentences and paragraphs. Finally, I will provide opportunities for you to practice your listening skills with exercises and real conversations.
I love watching the progress that my students make, and I want to
assist you in reaching your goals and dreams.
In the Critical Reading section of the SAT, you must have a strong vocabulary to score well. I will help you build the college-level vocabulary you need to answer correctly the sentence completion questions.
In the reading passages section, you must master three types of readings and three types of questions. I will teach you how to answer these questions effectively by knowing the purpose, main idea, and structure of the reading passage.
In addition, you will learn several key strategies to maximize your reading time, make educated guesses, and understand essential keywords that unlock the meaning of the sentence.
I have seen students raise their scores and attend the college of their choice. I'd like to help you reach your dreams.
In the Writing section of the SAT, you are required to write a persuasive essay from a prompt. The essay assesses how clearly you can express your ideas and how well you can apply the rules of standard written English. I will help you develop the skills you need to respond to the topic, develop a strong and compelling thesis, and organize your ideas logically.
The second part of the Writing section requires you to answer multiple-choice questions on grammar, usage, and word choice. We will review basic rules of grammar and practice making decisions about style and word choice to improve sentences and paragraphs.
After preparing for the SAT, the writing strategies you learn will become life-long habits for college and beyond.
I have a degree in Education from Loyola University, and I have taught English privately for over 20 years. I am also qualified by WyzAnt to tutor Spanish, SAT and ACT Prep, and ESL/ESOL.
During the last ten years, I have been asked to tutor students in study skills, so I have acquired a significant amount of experience in that area. I have assessed students' learning styles, worked on time management and organizational skills, reviewed note-taking skills, and taught various memorization techniques to aid in retaining information, such as lists, flashcards, and word-in-context phrases.
I would like to be certified in study skills since there is a growing demand.
