Elementary (K-6th)

In the past, I tutored children in grades 3-6 in the subjects of reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and phonics as a volunteer through the Mayor's Commission on Literacy (State of PA), as well as an employer's Adopt-a-School Program. Most recently, from 9/2012 to 3/2013, I tutored a 6-year boy that remained in Kindergarten two years due to his slow learning progress (personal home challenges). I am proud to say that in May, 2013 he made the Honor Roll and was promoted to the First Grade with flying colors! Not only was he promoted, but as he progressed in his learning abilities his confidence also grew by leaps and bounds. He moved from receiving F's on his vocabulary quizzes to proud A's/B's! I am confident that my tutoring style, patience, experience, compassion, and educational background "all" played some part in helping him achieve success.

ESL/ESOL

I have received 100-hours of specialized TESOL/TEFL classroom training to teach English to speakers of other languages. In addition to hands-on teaching practice, classroom management, and instructor-based evaluations (5 categories, 19 proficiencies) I am certified to develop student-specific lesson plans and teach in the following areas: vocabulary, speaking, listening, grammar, reading, business English, and writing. I not only tutor to the customization of each student, but also appeal to the visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic learner by using visual aides, role-play scenarios, computer technology, recorded applications, and other creative initiatives as applicable. Additionally, I am a member of the professional organization, Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (GA TESOL). Thank you for your consideration!

Reading

While living in the state of Pennsylvania (PA) I had the opportunity to work with my employers' Adopt-A-School volunteer program to assist youth in grades 3-6 with reading. Each participant connected with one child (vs classroom setting) to provide customized attention and tutoring. I also worked as a reading tutor in conjunction with the state of PA's Mayor's Commission on Literacy where I assisted adults and students. Along with fundamental reading tutoring, based on student's objectives and needs, I typically also address the following areas: reading comprehension, word meanings, vocabulary, spelling, and phonics.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
