About T.J.

I have degrees in Law (JD), Philosophy (BA), Biology (BS), and a minor in Analytic Chemistry. I have been tutoring for 8 years.

I have tutored students ages 10-35. My most extensive experience has been with children and young adults with learning disabilities (ADHD, Autism-spectrum). I have tutored elementary and middle school students in math, and college students in biology, chemistry, and economics.

I'm 25 years old; middle school and high school students in particular find my age and tutoring style accessible and engaging. Students should find my one-on-one tutoring sessions thorough and, hopefully, entertaining. My greatest asset as a tutor is my knack for explaining problems and solutions in a multitude of unique ways. This is especially useful with remedial and learning-impaired students, but every student I have had benefits from a new perspective.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have several years of experience working with children in both k-12 and college settings with various disabilities and learning disorders, Aspergers and Autism-spectrum disorders being among them. Most recently, I was employed by my undergraduate university to tutor math and sciences to students referred by the local "Disability Resource Center", which would pay for their tutoring, among other educational services.

More to the point, I was diagnosed with Aspergers/High-functioning Autism several years ago. I am personally familiar with the problems that children with Aspergers regularly confront.

Criminal Justice

I am attending Vanderbilt University Law School, and my course of study is focused primarily on criminal procedure. I have interned with both a District Attorney's office and the Public Defender. I have a great deal of exposure to the criminal justice system at the state and federal level.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have several years of experience working with children in both k-12 and college settings. My most recent experience with K-6 education was through Sylvan Learning Centers, where I tutored math to elementary and middle school students.

Genetics

I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology. I graduated both cum laude and with distinction, for my participation in a senior thesis project that focused on the effect of mutations on cell migration with respect to axon guidance in C. elegans.

Logic

I am currently attending Vanderbilt University Law School. More pertinently, I have a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, for which I took multiple classes concerning the development of formal logics, and propositional logic in particular. My knowledge of modal logic and its notation, however, is very limited.

Microbiology

I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology. I graduated both cum laude and with distinction, for my participation in a senior thesis project that focused on the effect of mutations on cell migration with respect to axon guidance in C. elegans.

My major allowed students to select one of several "tracks" of study. I selected the cell/micro biology track. I have experience tutoring cellular biology and microbiology at the undergraduate level.

Organic Chemistry

I have a minor in Analytic Chemistry, in addition to a Bachelor of Science in Biology (Cell). My minor primarily focused on methods of measurement and identification (both organic and inorganic), but I have taken two semesters of organic chemistry (lecture), and a separate organic chemistry lab. I graduated with honors.

Social Studies

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, and I am currently pursuing a Juris Doctor at Vanderbilt. Between the two, I have had extensive exposure to the history of Western philosophy, political theory, legal theory, and world history. I have also taken undergraduate-level classes in psychology and economics.
