I am an experienced and established University Professor teaching a wide cross-section of subjects relating to Language Arts, Rhetoric and Composition and the Humanities disciplines. I teach various forms of essay writing and composition for all ages and levels, but aimed at building durable and transferable essay writing skills that eventually bear out scholarly essays of worth and merit.
For me, this means teaching mechanics, structure, idea generation, grammar, word choice, syntax, rhetoric, critical thinking skills, reading comprehension and retention, vocabulary and etymology building, deductive and analytical reasoning, research skills, contextual thinking and synthesis of idea as well as editing skills.
If your child is in grade school I can get them started on this approach to reading and writing that will serve them well as they move towards college. Any child age 6 and up can benefit directly from my methods. I work well with a range of students in varied settings such as: required freshman composition classes, and specialized, themed, elite elective Honors writing workshops. I have tutored essay writing and expository writing in a one-on-one capacity at several 'Writing Centers' where I actively helped in curriculum development. I also work with my students individually in weekly conferences to help them apply the tenets from class discussions to their own work, as everyone approaches thinking and writing differently. I tutored writing and reading as well as general language arts to many ESL/ESOL students with great success. I also teach general study skills, college application prep and editing of application essays, and the prep for the verbal writing and logic sections of SAT, ACT and GRE tests and prep academy entrance tests to kids ages 8-18 for private academies and tutoring agencies.
I have a high success rate in all of my classes and the qualitative and quantitative university evaluations to substantiate this fact (provided upon request). I also have student testimonial letters attesting to my skills as a pedagogue, examples of my syllabi and examples of student work. I can furnish professional recommendation letters and classroom observations. Here is a snippet from Yale University Writing and Rhetoric department head, Alfred Guy, recommending me: "It is my pleasure to recommend Arin Mason as a brilliant teacher of undergraduates and as a colleague of impressive and engaging intelligence. She was a superb, exciting and highly successful teacher. What most impressed me about Arin's teaching was the range of students with which she succeeded. She is bright and sharp in all the right ways."
Mostly I love to teach and the zeal with which people devour newly acquired knowledge. I would love a chance to meet with you and work out a way to benefit the education of your family.
