I have a B.A from Swarthmore College (1992), and an M.A. and M.Phil from Yale University (2004), in E. Asian Languages and Literatures. I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and proficient in Spanish. I have been teaching Chinese language and history/culture courses for the past decade, at the college and high school levels. Currently, I'm based in Atlanta, GA, and teaching at a college in Atlanta. I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher, and enjoy teaching students of all levels and ages.
In addition to tutoring Chinese, I am also interested in tutoring students in English, Spanish, ESL, European History, and World History. Having gone through many years of graduate school, I can help you to read critically and to write incisively and effectively. I can also assist with basic studying skills, such as learning how to summarize the main points of an article, as well as how to write a clearly organized essay.
I have a student-centered approach, in which I take the strengths and weaknesses of each individual into account, to help create an interesting, lively lesson plan and study environment geared to the needs of each student.
I started studying Mandarin Chinese as a college student at Swarthmore College, where I graduated in 1992 with a B.A. in Asian Studies. I spent two summers studying in Taiwan while in college and right after college. I worked for a Chinese import-export company for a year after college, and I spent two months in China working. Since I love studying Chinese language and culture, I decided to go to graduate school to become more fluent. I earned an M.A. and M.Phil. from Yale University in E. Asian Languages and Literatures (2004). Since then, for the past nine years, I have been teaching Chinese language and literature/culture courses at the high school and college level. I have taught beginning students as well as advanced students, including AP Chinese during my job teaching at an independent school in California. Currently I am teaching Chinese at a college in Atlanta, Georgia. My teaching approach is student-centered, and I emphasize the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in my teaching, by using various materials and designing interactive activities to suit the needs of each student.
