Elementary (K-6th)

I have a total of 13 years experience as an elementary school teacher, and have an Educational Specialist (EdS) degree in education. I am competent and confident in my ability to teach all K-6 subject areas, including math, science, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, science, and social studies. I have been certified by WyzAnt to teach Algebra 1, American History, Biology, Ecology, Elementary Math, Elementary Science, English, ESL/ESOL, Grammar, Reading, Proofreading, and Vocabulary.

English

I am a highly experienced and motivating teacher with a mastery of all aspects of the English language, including spelling, reading, writing, grammar, handwriting, and vocabulary.

Painting

I have a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from New College in Sarasota, Florida. While there I took extensive coursework in painting and drawing. I have exhibited my paintings in Florida, Los Angeles, and Pennsylvania, and have won many awards for my work. Many of my paintings have been purchased and are in private collections throughout the world.

Phonics

In addition to 11 years as a second and third grade classroom teacher, I have two years of experience as a first grade reading teacher. As a reading specialist, I taught phonics along with modeled reading, shared reading, and guided reading. I have tutored several students in beginning reading, and have completed college coursework on the topic.

Praxis

I successfully completed the PRAXIS with all scores in the above average range. (Communication Skills - 678, General Knowledge - 674, and Professional Knowledge - 672.) I have over 15 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher and have completed a Masters degree in Education (GPA 4.0) as well as an Educational Specialist degree (GPA 3.7).

Religion

I attended a parochial school for grades K - 6 in which I received a rigorous religious education in Protestantism. In college I minored in religion, taking courses in world religions, the Gospels, Buddhism, modern philosophy and "Death of God" theology, and religious elements in modern literature. My thesis was on the work of Jesuit priest and paleontologist Teilhard de Chardin, who attempted to reconcile Christianity and Evolution. I was accepted into Yale Divinity School but instead served a mission for my church in Hiroshima, Japan. Studies included the essential unity of all religions and the influence of religion on culture and politics.

Social Studies

I have taken coursework in Methods for teaching Social Studies as part of my Teaching Certification Program. I have successfully taught Social studies for over 15 years as a classroom teacher. I have participated on my school district's Social Studies Standards and Materials Review Committees. I have designed many projects in social studies including the establishment of a class relationship with a class in Tokyo, Japan, a project in which students applied their understanding of the history and symbolism of the American Flag to create original designs for a new flag, a project connecting study of Native Americans to Language Arts through a study and creative use of Native American Picture Symbols, a "Voices in Black History" project in which students researched historic figures and created portraits and speech bubble in which each figure introduced themselves, annual President's Day letters to the President, a poster project for the Jimmy Carter Presidential Center. My formal study included graduate level courses in social studies, and I have coordinated research activities and school field trips to locations of historical significance in my neighborhood. I have designed a model democracy and token economy which I use as the model for my classroom management to teach elementary students how a democracy works.

Study Skills

I have successfully helped students in elementary, middle, and high school with developing good study skills. I have been able to help them with prioritizing, organizing an effective environment conducive to study, performing research using print sources, the internet, and primary sources, and time management.

Theatre

I have been extremely active in school theatrical productions throughout middle and high school. I also participated in community theatre productions. I majored in Theatre and Cinematic Arts at Brigham Young University in the MFA Acting Program. While there I studied theatrical production methods and the history of theatre from its beginnings to the present. I acted in several student films and formed a small theater group in which I directed and acted in modern one act plays. I have used Reader's Theatre with my elementary and middle school students on a regular basis.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
